err ...
I don't understand you ...
I mean, you can get the scepter pretty easily, with the final shortcut.
And it's enough to get the boss down : just kill the spawned minions by clicking.
You don't need any special item for the boss, actually, but killing minions without having to think about it is better...

I have more than a thousand deaths, and I've only ever beaten the game using the final shortcut.
Personally I have a bit of trouble with the final shortcut, since you have a very low chance of getting a jetpack/climbing gloves/other great items and a lower then regular chance of getting the kapala.

I don't think I would have won yet (well I probably would have, but in like 400 more deaths) if I hadn't discovered the black market, it's such a big help that it makes the whole game after you reach it (with enough money to afford a jetpack+gloves+spiked boots) a degree less difficult, especially if you get the Ankh without getting killed once by a shopkeeper.

Sorry for the triple post, but Here's an interview with Derek Yu.

Wow that trailer shows a ton of new stuff, I will be pretty upset if they don't release a PC version of it.
I believe he said that he might port it over, but it isn't set in stone. He'd be absolutely bonkers not to put it back on PC, assuming that he legally can.

Maybe it's parasitic. It never loses its flavor because you eventually die from having your nutrients stolen by it.

Any tips for killing shopkeeps? The only way I've done it so far is to get right up to them with a pistol or shotgun I just bought from them and shoot them.

Well, the way I use is:

1.  Pick up either a pot or skull.  For some reason it won't work with any other items.
2. Go to the shop.  Pick up the items in the shop and move them near the entrance of the shop (without leaving the shop).  This should lure the shopkeeper near the middle of the shop and get the items out of the way for the next step.
3. Throw the skull/ pot at the shopkeeper.  He should be stunned and drop his gun.  Very quickly move to grab his gun and shoot him (might as well shoot him multiple times just to be sure he's dead).
4. That should give you a gun and all of his items.  And the wrath of shopkeepers for the rest of the game, but isn't it more fun that way?

You don't even have to buy the shotgun to shoot, as far as I know. Also, this thread has made me boot up Spelunky all over again, and try and get to the third stage. I probably won't succeed.

'Course with Dwarf Fortress, the only relevant question is, "How far away will the ASCII gibs splash on landing?"
5 squares per limb, if you raise the north orthoclase bridge before sacrificing one of them so they have a straight shot to the bottom of the chasm.

Doesn't the quick dodge, jump on head method still work?

Bah, you'll succeed. It just takes practice.

Yeaaah but I always found that more risky.  Shopkeepers run and jump all over the place once you provoke them so it's better if you don't give them a chance to fight back when you're unarmed.

Ever since they changed the shopkeeps so that their wrath is endless, I've avoided stealing altogether, but when I did, I always found the jump on head method to be safer since it offers a slightly larger buffer between the drop of the gun and where the shopkeep falls. I'm assuming that the shopkeep can still grab the gun out of your hand if you're a second too slow.

I like bombing from above, or with sticky bombs is possible.

If the shopkeep is selling a web gun, try this: pick up the gun, turn towards him, and jump at him, AS YOU JUMP, FIRE THE GUN, with luck, he gets stuck and you land on his head, stomping him till he dies. Its fairly easy once you get the timing down.

^I haven't tried that.  For a completely safe method: You can also fire a web at the item nearest the shopkeeper.  It will hit the item, so it won't provoke him.  Then you can just set up a rope in the middle of the shop, climb it for safety, and drop a bomb in the web.  He'll go psycho when you drop the bomb, but he'll only run straight into the web.  Bye bye shopkeeper.

Btw, for those who don't know, shopkeeper wrath isn't endless if you don't kill the shopkeeper.  It only lasts a few levels.

I don't think this game likes me very much. I took the golden idol, unaware that there was a shop at the area where the boulder was headed and a few levels later I had my brains blown out.

Yeah that is something to watch out for.  It's usually possible to send the boulder in the other direction, although sometimes you'll just either have to skip the idol or take the wrath (and I speak as someone who loves "all wrath" runs).

if you have a spare bomb just place it near the idol, if you blow up the platform it sits on, it wont trigger the boulder.
