Eh, avoiding everything makes the later levels hard as hell

Once you learn how to fight certain enemies you can take out quite a bit of enemies.

Though there are a few things that make things a LOT easier, such as the spiked cleats and parachut.

Started playing this again, doing much better than last time I played.

About 6-7 games in, I opened the shortcut to the grasslands, despite that I made it there...once before? Also made it to snow in a couple of those.

Latest game was going awesome, had cape, 6 life, spring shoes, and climbing gloves.
Cue dark level on level 8, and I die.

Is there any reason NOT to kill the shopkeeps if they stock a pistol or bow (bomb arrows FTW!)? With the shotgun the other shopkeeps shouldn't be too much of an issue and in return you get all the loot you could ever want and the best weapon ever for the rest of the game!

I'ma put the answer to this in spoilers, because I think it's actually considered a spoiler.

If you're going for an incredibly large gold win then yes, there is a reason to leave them alive. Otherwise it's really up to you, but only blame yourself when you catch a couple of pellets with your head  :D Some exits make it easy for you to deal with them, others are pretty difficult to deal with. It's usually better to just resist the urge, the shotgun isn't THAT great. The loot helps, but so does being alive.

I was surviving much later, even with the shopkeeps being evil, because of the gun. There were a couple times that the exits were pretty much impossible without bombs, though...

Have you guys tried using YASM? (Yet Another Spelunky Mod)
It's a really nice mod. It isn't extremely cheap, yet it puts some things into Spelunky that should have been there in the first place, in my opinion... like an inventory system.

You can find it at this URL:

Someone may have posted this already, but I'm putting it up here just in case.

I think that a full blown inventory doesn't really fit in Spelunky, a large part of the game is deciding what to take with you.

That said, a single backup spot, like on the belt, would be nice for some small objects. Juggling the girl and the shotgun sucks.

Speaking of shotguns, I've decided the key to success is a cape/jetpack and a teleporter/shotgun. With any of those combos the game becomes very easy, particularly with the jetpack.

And telefragging shop owners is so fun, and it doesn't count as a 'kill' so they aren't insanely angry forever!

Actually, it can be anywhere, not behind that specific thing. Its the rate of the blinking that you have to follow, like a game of hot/cold.

That's...fun.

Edit: Also, I can see scumming for Haunted levels nice. There is a 12% chance of shotgun, and if you kill the Western vampires, you get a cape.

So, the area where things stop working (after a certain distance away from yourself, time freezes, things pause wherever they), in addition to a pitcher's glove and a rock, equals a delayed ricochet that hits you when you get close. That hurt :(

I love YASM. It's the only way I play. AND I still have never won. The game is so hard that even being able to carry a bunch of items I still never make it past the ice level...

I wish this game had more mods/community for it, it's so lovely and has lots of potential.

So the game is paused on the final boss, and I just took a break and ate dinner.

Can anyone give me any tips/basic strategy? I really don't want to lose! :(
I have 2 hearts left...I have NO gear except a shotgun, tons of bombs, and a couple ropes.

He stomped on me.
I shall pretend that I won though. I'm actually quite impressed I made it so far with only a shotgun bought early on. Usually I do much better with at least a cape or something.

Spam throw bombs in his direction, and use ropes to get above him.
