Are there any tips from veteran player? I only got to the ice level once back when, I think, the game was fairly new.

Hardly a veteran, but:

I find the more times I play in a row the more agitated I get with my new characters, the more rocks I throw off the opposite wall at my head, run into spikes etc. If you die, leave it for a few minutes before returning.

My pre-match team-talk (to myself) goes something like this:
Just chill, take each obstacle on it's own merit, buy the jetpack & shotgun, don't fu** with shopkeepers.

Which normally ends up with me variously: rushing things, trusting to chance at each spike trap (I CAN make that jump ... *squelch*), stealing the Jetpack and getting summarily shot down amongst other things.

But it's so funny each time ... he he he ...

XBLA and nostalgia? Or the whole gamepad thing?
I meant NES. :)

Best advice I can give is simply.

Don't underestimate sacrificing. You sacrifice enough, you get a nifty random item, then a unique item, then 99 bombs.

Clear each obstacle on its own. Don't rush them.

Learn to jump on spiders and frogs. Its helpful as hell to know how to judge their jump arc.

Go slow. Unless you're going for the timed things in which case go slower.

Just not TOO slow. Otherwise, you start feeling like you shouldn't be there, then you feel dead.

For weapons, isn't there a magical staff in the fourth area that kills enemies quite nicely?

Also, in the first area, there's a GCS, but it's pretty easy to kill- Just throw a bomb into the webs under it.

Tunnel Man, Tunnel Man, sometimes you got to love that Tunnel Man.

Yeah, although to get the staff you have to kill an admittedly easy boss. Who also loves walking into magma

Reminds me a lot of Spelunker i used to play in my old cpc464, though it didn't have the randomisation et replayability of Spelunky.

I spent lots of time gathering money to obtain those shortcut tunnels.

But that's a double edged trap, certainly you can skip lots of levels by using those shortcut once you buy them (the last shortcut takes a lot of time due to the insane amount of money needed), but because you have skipped lots of level, you have much less money to buy things in shop, much less items, basically it's even harder.

Personnally, i strongly hate the ice cavern stage, on the whole game it is where i have strictly no fun in how it is insanely easy to fall to death after all the time you spent to carefully move through the mines and the jungles, a single bad step and you fall out of the screen and die, i wish i knew anything about coding to be able to change the available source code to replace the whole ice cavern stage with just more mine/jungle/maian levels.

I like the ice stages, they let me get my first win.

I had the hedjet and was just constantly sacrificing yeti's for the bone amulet. Then I went and harvested blood for like 20 minutes. I had so much health in the end i should shrug off a shotgun blast

Won't happen. Spelunky was made in gamemaker, which, if memory serves right, can't compile for mac.

Spiders are public enemy #1.  Don't screw with them.  Run like hell if they are almost on top of you.  Try to whip them in a 1-tile-high corridor so you can't miss, or throw stuff at them from long range, preferably before they drop.  NEVER, EVER, EVER THROW POTS.  ALWAYS whip pots, and from a square away (or you're likely to get hurt by whatever pops out).  Never throw a pot.  If you throw a pot at a snake, a spider might pop out of it, and then you just made the problem worse.

Learn to jump on spiders and frogs. Its helpful as hell to know how to judge their jump arc.

Jumping on spiders, given reasonable space, is fairly easy after some practice, frogs on the other hand are another matter.

I find the more times I play in a row the more agitated I get with my new characters, the more rocks I throw off the opposite wall at my head, run into spikes etc. If you die, leave it for a few minutes before returning.
This has worked a charm.

Thanks for the advice everyone including those I didn't quote. I've got back to the ice level again. Had to edit the gamepad controls manually for some reason but it's working great with a SNES controller; I feel like I'm a little kid again.

Frogs aren't that hard, you just have to jump after they do, so that their jump arc is below yours.

Once you get the timing and aim down, frogs make good cushions for falls.

My best advice is to avoid everything and make a dash for it. Try to make sure you get to the ice level with a compass and a cape or jetpack. Steal these if you have to.

I've come very close to beating Spelunky on the time trial one.
