Xbox is essentially a "pay us £200, and we can guarantee any game you buy for this will run, on the best settings".

Except "best settings" means "settings that will work on the 360", not necessarily "best possible settings on your PC", and sometimes even that isn't true; I've had friends complain to me about games throwing errors about software version incompatibilities.

The overheating thing was played up to hell. My xbox has overheated and died twice. Each time I got a brand new one free and an extra month of xbox live free for 48 hours of inconvenience.

You say the problems are overhyped, then admit that two of yours have died. Do you not see the problem there?

They also lied about the failure rates, then later refused to say what they actually were (way, way higher than standard/acceptable figures).

Ok, fine, you got me there.

But dying twice in 5 years? That's A better failure rate than my computer, and definately better than my PS3 and Wii. Of course, this is my personal experience, but still, in my case, overhyped.

I've never heard stories of wii's dying. Heck, previous nintendo products were virtually indestructible. The PS3's I've heard some odd stories about patches, and some failures, but never to the tune of the 360.

As for Spelunky, great game. It would be great to see it spread through the schools like wildfire.

I considered necro-ing this thread a few weeks ago to let you all know that I won this game, but it didn't seem appropriate.

But it does now ... my first win on the 412th go - well done me.

DUDE? WTF are you doing to your toys?

I dont have a ps3, but my ps2 (FIRST edition) is still working. My Wii is first edition too, and only locked up once or twice, nothing a reset wouldnt fix.

My PC is like what? 5 or 6 years old, and the only thing that broke was... wait, nothing. The first GPU was fried already when I bought it, but thats _it_, It's even running with the first XP installation I put on there (knock on wood). And if it would break down, chances are I could fix it myself.

If there's something overhyped, it's the xbox itself.

But that's beside the point. My point is... well, I dont have a point, I have a question:
is an xbox a PC for dummies, and are dummies paying for windows software on XBLA, or what?

Chances are its yes and yes. And again, in the case of spelunky, its probably a good thing.

What are you doing to your equipment that they are breaking so much?  I have a computer 10 years old with Win98FE still going strong.  None of my consoles have ever died(Besides my 360 which was loud as hell and eventually overheated, after having it for 3 months).  I own a TI-99/4a(With the tape drive!), Sega Master System, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, Gamecube, PS1 and 2, and a wii.  They all still work.  The only computer hardware issue I've ever had is a power supply dying.

Also congrats mendonca.  I find that after I have all the shortcuts I win a game started from the ice area about 1/3 of the time and pretty much always make it to the temple area.(Especially if I find a Kali altar)  Can't say the same for the jungle.

Unless of course they don't fit properly and your feet blister up like bubble wrap.
Oh ho ho, but don't try to return the shoes, because they won't take them back once you've worn them.
Especially if that fat pig Tony is at the desk.

I'll bet if I still had my old NES, it'd work, except for that damn blinking orange screen, but that's a problem it came with. On the other hand, wiggling the cartridge around trying to get it to work has caused some interesting things to happen, like super-powerful glitch-characters in Ultima III.

Haha, I remember those "wiggle the cartridge" quests :D. Most of the time it produced unplayable "hanging" situations though.

Eh, beats me. They're always breaking while i'm away so I assume its family not being careful.

Now, here's a question for you. Why is it that when someone hasn't had that many issues with the 360 is it that /someone/ has to tell them they're wrong. Surely that's opinion.

There is a fix for that blinking orange screen!

See, the 72-pin connector that you plug the cartridges into...tends to oxidize, and wear down.  And that's a recipe for the blinking orange screen.  However!  It's easy, nay trivial, to take the case off your NES and remove that connector, swapping it out for a new one!

Where will I find a new NES 72-pin connector, you ask?  Well, enough people decided they want one that a company or two have started creating replacements.  You can buy them online, but they're normally in bulk, because the single best place to get a new 72-pin connector is a retro gaming store!  The one I went to in Portland, Oregon had the new connector for like five or ten bucks, if I installed it myself.  They also offered to install it for me, for a fee, which might be worthwhile if you're paranoid.

The only time I've witnessed the flashing light since replacing my 72-pin connector was when I tried my old Double Dragon 2 cartridge, and the grime and oxidation on the cartridge's connector was clearly visible.  Q-tip, rubbing alcohol, and a little patience; poof, there you go.  Anyway, I beat like half my old games, but I'm still working on the new ones I picked up at that same store (Wizardry is way more fun on the NES than it is on an Apple, and Wizards & Warriors is still hard as ever).

I'm going to have to start playing this again, not that I was any good, as I recently got bought a snes usb controller and it seems like a perfect mix. Are there any tips from veteran player? I only got to the ice level once back when, I think, the game was fairly new.

If you don't think you can clear a spike tower in the jungle, use a bomb.  It's not worth the risk, and spare bombs won't help you if you're dead.  Corollary:  If I have three bombs and I have to choose between new boots or +bombs, I'll probably go for the bombs.  Don't try and bomb things in midair.  Try to only use one bomb for any given task; if you're thinking of using three bombs to dig straight down a floor, look for another way.  Extra money is nice, but only feel obligated to snag those risky idols if you're too broke to buy more bombs.

No hand-held weapon is ever worth carrying for more than a little while, except for rocks.  Don't feel bad about ditching a pistol.  Put some effort into keeping your shotgun, at least.  Don't even bother picking up a web gun or a teleporter, or especially a bow.  Oh, and if you ever made it to the ice area even once, you probably already know this--but you do want to carry a rock or a skull around at all times!  Rocks are the single best way to kill monsters, plus they set off arrow traps.  I find that flinging arrows around is more dangerous to you than to other critters, don't bother with it.  But rocks...man, those, I go back for if it's reasonable to do so.  Sometimes I like rocks better than shotguns.  If you're about to go down a steep cliff with a rock, and there's another rock nearby, take the time to drop both rocks down.  You can never have too many rocks.

Spiders are public enemy #1.  Don't screw with them.  Run like hell if they are almost on top of you.  Try to whip them in a 1-tile-high corridor so you can't miss, or throw stuff at them from long range, preferably before they drop.  NEVER, EVER, EVER THROW POTS.  ALWAYS whip pots, and from a square away (or you're likely to get hurt by whatever pops out).  Never throw a pot.  If you throw a pot at a snake, a spider might pop out of it, and then you just made the problem worse.
