Okay my brother got to the last boss with my sage advice guiding him.

He blew up a pillar in level 5 of area 2, which opened a door to the black market. He robbed it, obviously. In the bottom right corner, there was a small shop that only had an ankh in it. He got it after the shopkeepers went hostile, though, so we don't know exactly what the shop was. He rampaged through area 3, killed the giant mummy in area 4, and took the scepter.



He died later on, but the ankh revived him. Apparently, it resurrects you and places you at the start of the level. He got to the locked door after losing the ankh, so it may very well be that the ankh is needed to unlock the door.

The last boss is a giant golden Olmec head, and the scepter (which shoots little purple bubble things) doesn't have any affect on it. Bombs don't seem to either. My brother died in combat with it, but we suspect that you might have to some how damage the large ruby on it's forehead. That, or make a tunnel going off the level and try to get the head to fall out of the game.

I think I know how to beat the final boss

I tried a bunch of stuff but eventually I found out that there's lava underneath the floor, you just need to get it to smash through or bomb your way through, I died before I could try it but I think that's it.
Couple of tips
1. don't stand on it's head, this seems to kill you and the spiders 'n' stuff it spits out will anyway.
2. if you can, lure it to one side of the room then run to the other side and work on blowing a hole in the ground. Make the hole a little way away from the side, like one or two blocks so you've got room to lure it in..

Is anyone else surprised at the effectiveness of using the girl as a weapon?

Yeah, but you throw her in an annoying arc that makes her fly just above most enemies and usually into some spikes.

Rocks are the best non-gun weapons, though. The little ones that you can throw. They never break and they're easy to use.

New version?  Oh god!  My life is doomed!

My first time getting to the last boss, I immediately said "Hey there's a platform up there, let me jetpack up to it".  And ran out of fuel.  And realised on the way down that I had no cape, no parachute, and only one health.  Haven't gotten back to him since...

Oh, and discovered something.  If the ghost passes over a gem, it turns into a BIG SHINY DIAMOND worth a base of 5,000 monies.

Oh man.  Now I want to kill a GCS and lure the ghost over its gems.  (Seems like the GCS drop anywhere from 0-4 gems)

Also?  Crates are the best thing in the universe.

 Also, beat last boss. Whew. The new portal to level 13(World 4) helps quite a bit.

My best game so far has been the one where I found a jetpack in a crate on the first level. Got halfway through the third world before a yeti knocked me into the pit. Haven't gotten back since.

I wish I'd record my games more. I have seen some awesome deaths that would be great sigs.

The one I facepalmed harder was one where I threw a stone up to trigger a dagger trap and the dagger hit the wall behind me and stuck in my butt, making me fall into spikes.

I have beaten Spelunky. You beat the end boss the same way you beat Bowser in Super Mario Bros. 3, except you have bombs this time and much farther to go. Still haven't unlocked any of those doors though.

What does "You hear rushing water" in the second temple mean?
I got eaten by a plant by accidently falling on itm so I never found out.

 You know how the first area has a giant spider compared to the smaller spider? Think of an area 2 analog.

 Also, I found out that while most level 3 areas don't have a floor, there are some level 2 areas with a floor of water. Huh.
