[40d5] Biome's animals stop spawning
« on: January 02, 2009, 02:54:41 am »

I made a fort that was intended to subsist entirely on hunting, which worked great for a while. I'd managed to butcher over 40 deer, foxes and wolves, and one cougar. However, at this point the animals stopped spawning. It's now been over a year without any new animals to hunt -- I've had to buy some raccoons from the Elves to breed, and start farming. I still get plenty of vermin, just no butcherable animals.

Other things that might be relevant: I'm playing with TEMPERATURE:NO, ECONOMY:NO, INVADERS:NO, ARTIFACTS:NO. My popcap is 20, which I have reached.

Here's my save: http://rapidshare.com/files/178937491/40d5-save-animals_stop_spawning.rar.html

Use DFFD (Dwarf Fortress File Depot), rather than rapidshare, cause the latter is annoying.

Also: This is a known bug, search first before reporting, thank you.

I searched the known bugs list (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_bugs.html), and did not find it listed.

I believe it isn't so much a bug as a feature.  Animal populations in a given region can be hunted into extinction, for example wolves in the US.  Currently in DF creatures are created instead of actually breeding and moving acrossed the world.  The extinction feature just isn't fully completed yet, and this sometimes results in the region around your fortress reaching extinction early.
