Apparently, modding wagons to be able to hold 1000x their normal capacity causes traders to arrive at your fortress with so many items that the universe is itself torn asunder, in the form of hideous lag, a sharp FPS drop, and an inability to abandon the fortress and run like hell.  Fear the wagon the size of a small planet, loaded with enough meat, cheese, stone, metal, and crafts to have come from every civilization on a thousand different worlds.

I will remember this for future reference.

Anybody else have any amusing stories of raw edits gone horribly wrong?

Accidentally setting dwarves with Sever On Break and natural temperature of the sun instead of cats. I ended up with a good 200 cats wandering around during a nuclear dwarfsplosion.

I made a subspecies of Giant Cave Spider that spun flaming silk.

Worked just fine until the migrants started to spontaneously combust.

The World Without Knifebear — A much safer world indeed.
regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Trying to mod in and balance a sieging ironman civilization. I made it playable to test out whether or not the custom weapons worked. When the ironman caravan came the first time around, my Depot exploded, and I didn't check to see why. Didn't mind, as they left behind a lot of extra metal that sped things up a lot.

When they came back and the caravan guards ran into the fledgling fort and started destroying every building in sight without anyone batting an eye, I realized my error.

What was your error? Building destroyer?

Yeah, didn't take it out. Apparently, building destroyer civilization entities destroy buildings. Who knew?

Let me think . . . ah yes, the Tahtorak. Size 40 megabeast with a slash attack.  It's intelligent too, so it can gain stats.

There's also the Ussal crab, a giant, domesticated crab.  It has the [HASSHELL] tag, so the game recognizes ussal crab shell as a material.  Occasionally, you get a dwarf that likes ussal crab shell.  The problem?  The stuff you get from butchering is hard-coded, so you can't get shells from butchering them.

Just so y'all know, most of my modding experience comes from the LEGO mod.  When I bring it up in discussions like this, it's not that I'm advertising or anything, just that it's where most of my modding blunders come from.

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Spoiler: SLIGHTLY NSFW (click to show/hide)
So yeah.  Tons of body parts + not a single one of them INTERNAL or SMALL.
And honestly, don't ask why a lot of them are in there.
I was just adding stuff to add it, really.
And seeing !!Urist McUrist's soul!! lying on the ground with a bloody trail is fun too.

What difference does sever on break make? They're going to burn to death anyway.

I decided I was going to build up insane defenses on my fortress and then try to stop an Ender Goblin Siege.  I started the game with Ender Goblins in the raws but invaders turned off in the init file.  I thought I would have ample time to prepare.  The summer of my second year they show up to trade!?!?!?  This is the first time I ever had goblins show up to trade.  Since they had building destroyer 2 they killed the depot as soon as they got to it.  I tried building a new one but they refused to go to it.  They also refused to leave in a timely fashion.  I had to abandon the game before they went insane.

That HEAR tag, specifically, right now only allows them to wear, err "ear"rings on the body part in question.
Yup.
