40d6 - Trouble Generating Pocket World
« on: January 01, 2009, 06:14:36 pm »

I don't know if this has been reported yet, but based on a quick search, it doesn't appear that it has.

I just downloaded and unzipped 40d6 (Linux) and I attempted to generate a pocket world. It took over 1000 tries and multiple warnings before it finally gave me one.

It looks to be a relatively normal pocket world with a relatively interesting history, but the sheer number of rejections in its generations (related to dwarves dying out, based on the warnings) strikes me as bugged.

The only thing I edited prior to generating the world is my init file, so here it is, in case I somehow screwed something up.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Sorry if this has been reported before or it's just that I got very unlucky. Just seems that 1000 rejections due to dwarves dying out in a row seems kind of odd.

Pocket worlds are notoriously difficult to generate.  3000+ rejects.

Yeah, despite the fact that individual rejects are almost instant, they add up quickly and can take a long time. This isn't unique to 40d6.

Try a Smaller or Small world, they tend to generate really fast.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Huh. That's odd.
Never happened to me before.

Thanks.

Try making the worldgenner end in year one. Very little would happen, preventing dwarves from dying out.[/untestedspeculation]

I have consistently seen large numbers of rejects with pocket worlds in all versions, it is quite normal.  The only thing I found to be bugged with it is the window that pops up after a certain number of rejections.  One of the options is to keep retrying and not pop up that window again for that rejection type.  I find this option does not work, and the window will often repear just a few hundred rejects later.

With a different rejection type.
