Grand Staircase Design?
« on: December 31, 2008, 08:28:17 pm »

Hey there, I'm just wondering if any of you have a grand central staircase in your fortress. I'm just planning out my fortress now, and the current design looks so-so. Can anyone think of a better one than this:

Code: [Select]
XXX   XXX
X       X
X       X

X       X
X       X
XXX   XXX

Thanks to everyone.

 Bottom level:

5x5 circular pit going down to the bottom of the map.

For each level above: Increase the radius and add ramps to the sides. Make sure the center is empty.

Top level: One level below the surface layer, as to keep a roof.

 I call it the crater.

Don't use up/down staircases. A surprisingly large number of things (including being born) can cause dwarves to fall, which usually has no effect, since they are already on the ground, but, when on staircases, this drops them to the bottom of the staircase. Which can be deadly.

Reminds me of a cartoon.

Someone opens the hatch door that Urist Mcdwarf was on.

And it repeats.

Which (IIRC) can be prevented by hatchs. I almost always make hatches just for that reasons, I prefer compact staircases and don't minds the flickers that hatches on up/down stair causes.

This is no thread for compact staircases, this is about GRAND staircases! GWAHAHA!

Another idea: A spiral ramp, except every half-turn there is a bridge over the central shaft instead of the next ramp segment.

 Hmm, time to make it...

There was a neat design in that one fort spanning a gorge. Forgot to save it though

I like to build 4 1 square spiral staircases at each corner of a central pit.
To clarify:
Code: [Select]
Z0:
>.
..

Z-1:
<>
..

Z-2:
.<
.>

Z-3
..
><

Z-4
>.
<.
Also I can't remember which is up or down so if I got them wrong there:
>=down
<=up
