Champions shouldn't use archery ranges
« on: December 30, 2008, 11:47:05 am »

Just what the title says. I have quite a few champion marksdwarves and they hog the archery range, so my new recruits never get to shoot and the champs use up all my practice bolts.

Maybe an option to set allowed skill levels like you can with workshops?

That would be a very good thing to do.

I think skill degredation is planned, so you won't be able to stay a champion UNLESS you're in the range 4 hours a day kind of thing...

Let's take it a step further, let us disable sparring for certain squads/troops altogether

That's a very good point, I didn't think about that.

Why would a professional suddenly give up their craft simply because they're the best?

Because I, their lord and master who decides whether they live or die, told them to  :D

Where did you read about this?

Attribute degradation is planned at least.  From dev notes: "I've put in the attribute rust system from Armok 1, so it keeps track of how long it has been since you've used an attribute, and if you don't use it for a while, you'll start to accumulate rust that will decrease the effective value of your attribute, and if you accumulate enough rust, you'll actually start to lose the actual attribute value. Rust is very easy to remove though, as it gets worked off quickly whenever you use that attribute, so effectively this won't come up unless your dwarves or your adventurer really work at not working intently. Needless to say that I am just thrilled!  ;D

I find these the most awesome:

Core72, ROBUST ATTRIBUTE SYSTEM, (Future): Attributes are a sad, sad placeholder right now. There should be more attributes, say those from Armok 1, and their development, to the extent that they change, should depend on use rather than random assignment. They should degrade slowly over time if left completely unused.

although if you are questioning 'soon'... he's touching attributes now, so I can hope

Somehow I'm picturing a massively overtrained archer firing through the target, through the wall behind the target, through several unfortunate bystanders, through a low flying giant eagle, and into the goblin fortress parallel to yours causing the resident demon to explode into bloody, flaming chunks. Only then do you hear the sonic boom.

As a stopgap measure, you could switch the champion's weapon to either a hammer (the skill he uses to bash with his crossbow when he's out of bolts) or wrestling (used for dodging attacks) when he's off duty. Requires more time and micromanagement to get him back on duty again in an emergency, but it also makes him a better-rounded combatant if he winds up unexpectedly caught in melee.

You can also put the champions on duty until you run out of practice ammo.

Does that means if I leave the useless professionals long enough, they'll revert to being plebes or at least remove it from the skill list? DO WANT, at least it'd make for cleaner lists and faster re-listing to actual used/assigned skills  ;D

As for the topic I've rarely had problems since I uses a lot of archery ranges and decent pace of bone bolts, but I tend to only station my champion teams around so I can say that method works decently well. I does like the idea of assigning skill levels to archery targets since, well, bolts runs out, but smacking each other don't  ;D

No, it'd mean they'd lose their superdwarvenly stats over time because they did no carpenting or whatever

It would be nice to be able to mod the game so we'd only get peasants as immigrants though. And a separate tab for social/military skills
