New Built in Option to help us in beta testing....
« on: December 29, 2008, 07:47:23 pm »

Toady, can you build in a init option, which lets us set if we want to have the underground hidden or not?

It would be a great help for beta testing the game. Also it would mean we wouldn't need 2nd party programs to do it anyways.

It would default to off at first. If we want to "cheat", or we are really trying to beta test and test stuff, we can turn it on.

I of course normally try testing everything, but it can be a bit hard if I can't find certain things on the map :)

(is the game in alpha or beta, i keep forgetting)

Are you sure you only want this for testing? ;)

And while the game is technicaly still alpha, i've never heard "alpha-testing"...

I seem to recall that menu says that it's in alpha, but well... it's pretty damn good for an alpha game, not that much bugs, and what bugs there are tend to be more of quirks rather than game-killing bugs  ;D

And as for the idea, I'd say it sounds good, but well... strip-mining every level sounds more functional with invaders turned off and military slaughtering everything that so much as hiccups. ( Yes, a lot more work, a lot longer, but I think that's more in spirit of game and not needing init option if you can turn off invaders and a few other options )

Well having it turned on all the time would most likely make your Fortress look like crap, because you can see all the rock around it...Bit of a eye sore.

If i just felt like messing around in DF, i would turn it on. But if i was building a serious fortress i would turn it off.

Well now you have heard of Alpha Testing :D

First for everything hehe

What would be nice however for in the future, are skills or ability's which let your dwarfs sense gems or minerals. Once a Dwarf manages to sense gems or minerals, they would then appear on the map.

How ever i would assume that they would need to be close to the minerals or gems, if the minerals or gems are far away and hidden, they cant sense them.

The difference between an alpha test and a beta is that an alpha test is to figure out how things should work and expose basic flaws. Most of the time, alpha testing is done by a systems developers and those indirectly involved in creating a system. A beta test is a release candidate exposed to a larger ecosystem of scrutiny and abuse to work any final kinks out before releasing a finished product.

Many of the features don't even exist until you find it.

Hmm.... Someone should tell Microsoft that!  ;D

Seriously though, I find this idea quite interesting. I've only been at it for a few months, but I can see and actually have felt the want for this particular feature. I think it's a good idea.

A cheat code to reveal all map features as if a dwarf had discovered them would be nice. Well, all but one of them at any rate

And Honestly im sick and tired of waiting around for someone to code a program to reveal the map, which doesn't require me to use .NET

Im sure the linux people would be happy with this option also.

If you dont code this in toady only because its "Cheating" well other people will always make 2nd party programs to do it anyways.

However, if it would take out too much time from you, then please don't waste your time on it, we will survive without it.

:)

What would it do with that one; make it look like the surrounding stone?

That option would be a great help for underground diversity modders.

Can't you already get a sort of general idea of where a feature is by using the trade depot access exploit?
