Messing with reactions requires a regen, doesn't it?
Only adding reactions does that, which falls under adding/removing/renaming entire entries.

So let me get this straight: if I added an entry in the graphics files, say for a fire snake, would the world need to be regenerated?  Or are fire snakes hard coded?

You mean editing graphics_example or another text file in raw/graphics?  That won't ever require regen.  However, since fire snakes are vermin, they can't be assigned graphics tiles -- they just use the character assigned to them.

Would I have to regen when I removed some stuff from the \raw\objects\matgloss stuff?
please don't magma me  :'(

EDIT: It seems not to be nessecery, since I removed aquifier from the files(I hate those things, will put them back in when I want an aquifier for some crazy engineering), and found the exact same spot again, but without the aquifier =D

Removing entries requires re-gen.  Removing data from the entries does not.

Thank you all for clarifying everything, and answering people's questions..
Can't forget about ignoring the stupid comments, too..
That's always good..

I'm here to say I'm still here and updating this if any changes are required.

On a related note, which files do you need to move when you update your DF version? I've previously always just regenned in the new version, but with all of these d#'s, I'd like to keep going..

Each savegame is a folder inside /data/saves.  Usually they're labeled "region1," "region9" or something like that.  Just move that folder.  Unless you have mods, in which case you should copy across your /raw/objects folder too.

just few things i remarked:
changing proffesion possibilities on civ-entities take effect immedietly.Whoever adding new items (to the entity direct or ANVIL tag to copper for a civ wich use minor metal) need a regen too.
On an other side if you make a creature not speak during worldgen (so at war with others) then but back can_speak (with a fort starded, becouse you can not control non speaking civ members) all war ends (with non thiefing and non snatching races at least) and elfs come to trade :(
Not really related but having duplicated creatures makes funny (and buggy) things too (i added a frogman civ but had two frogman creatures. so that is who lizardmans made their own race in my game ... (seen in legends but it crashed soon ...)

i don't really see why do you quote yourself here? i just made some precisions about what can and can not be changed on civ specific entity tokens whithout new worldgen ... "pretty much anything" can be ellaborated a bit more, so i tougth you welcome some more detailed informations ...
