Which Version
« on: December 29, 2008, 10:26:06 am »

Hi, This might not be the right place to ask sorry but I had dwarf fortress downloaded on my computer and had some problems with it so I removed it and wanted to re-download it.  I downloaded the Mirror 1 on the downloads page but I want the 3-d version that has actual characters.  Which download should I download?
Thanks much!

First off, the wiki is your friend. Just for future reference because you won't have ANY idea what's going on.

You downloaded a folder called df_28_181_40d right? That's the latest version.

This game uses an ASCII tileset by default. You can find a bunch of other tilesets (graphics packs) by searching the wiki (link provided above).

I'm still a little confused on how I know what to download.  Sorry, not trying to be a non-savvy girl.  My ex always downloaded everything for me.  I've read the wiki fortress page before.  The download just brings it back to this site.  Should I just search the internet for tilesets?  I really enjoy this game but just am not as literate when it comes to downloading and such.

You might be able to find some pre-configured downloads of the game with graphic packs on the wiki, but it will limit your choices a bit and I don't know how up-to-date those are. Most decent graphics packs should have install instructions, anyway.

Link, because it can be a mite tricky to find:

Hope that helps.

^The most recent release found here^

DF is not a 3d game. All the graphics are flat. HOWEVER, there are different layers piled up on top of each other. Those layers are called z-levels.

Read this article.

It's just a tad out of date, but still very useful.

If you find that you just can't handle the ASCII anymore...

One more question.  I had this problem before and it may just be because of my monitor but I can't get the window to fit on the screen.  Even when I move the window over to see the rest of the words it only goes as far as by Tarn Ada and cuts off.  When trying to choose a point to embark from I can't see the environment.  It is not giving me the option for full screen.  Can I change the size of the stuff to fit in the window?  Not really sure how to say it.

What resolution are you running?
Also, did you modify init.txt?

Ok, are you using a 16x16 tileset?

Even using a 16x16 char set you should not exceed your monitors native resolution of 1280x1024.

To switch to fullscreen mode, simply hit F11.

You can always use the May Green graphics pack at http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.htm
This reccomends a resolution of 1280x1024 so you should be ok.

For you vanilla version if you navigate to your DF folder then Data\Init\Init.txt, open it up, scroll down to where it says [WINDOWEDX:?] and [WINDOWEDY:?] and make sure their corresponding values are no greater than your monitors native resolution.
If they are, then you will have problems. This being the case, head to the afore mentioned wiki for information on how to adjust these according to your tile size along with the [GRID:?] setting.
