Can whips be any good?
« on: December 29, 2008, 02:38:18 am »

A few of my last adventurers were lashers.
When modestly outnumbered or worse, they do very badly, as they can't cause enough damage to put the enemies out of action at a sufficient rate.
Does it ever get better? Can an adventurer with sufficient lashing skills take care of five or so wolves without relying on defensive skills more than, say, an axeman?

I think whips are mostly designed to inflict pain/incapacitate, so they aren't good  undead slaying weapons starting out.  I managed to get a lasher ranked up a bit, and they start severing limbs at a fairly consistent rate once you're good at it.  At that point crowd control isn't much of an issue, as you're taking off arms and legs with each lash assuming you have regular counterstrikes.

Stay clear of giant scorpions and spiders, though.  Lashers tend to target limbs, and creatures who feel no pain and have a lot of spare appendages are much harder to kill with whips.

In short, they're exactly what you would expect:  A good torture tool.

Whips DO need to be made more powerfull, and not be made of metal in future versions. I cant get into the idea of becoming a lasher running around with a iron stick.

I've always thought of them as being metal chains with a blade on one end, and a stick on other end  ;D ( Though, I've thought of metal cloth a couple times, but I don't think anyone would have the time to thin out metal into metal threads and weave them into cloths, at least from raw metal )

Why, exactly?  There's a good reason no army in history has ever armed soldiers with whips.  You just can't do that much solid damage with one, short of maybe lashing a neck open.

This thread have brought me an idea.
What if I mod all maces and hammers into the same weapongroup and make whips to use hammer skill? This is going to be in my mod. Now hammerer tortures prisoners with whips not hammers. More painful and less deadly.

I dunno why, but whips suddenly became very effective once I modded in fedoras and outfitted my adventurer in leather.

Lasher skill could become more useful if flails used lasher skill :P

Well, both weapons are similar in concept, except you wield the flail differently since it has a heavy metal piece on its end.

Metal whips exist... but they are usually an entire reconstruction rather then simply replacing leather with metal (and yes they are pretty nasty).

Yeah Whips need an upgrade, but that should wait for the combat arc.

It would be great using Whips to grapple enemies and disarm them.
