I can't get any Civ 4 mods to work for me.  Most of the time, I tell it to load the mod, and it says the program has to restart to do so, then I get a critical error and the program has to close.  One time I got it to try loading some version of Fall From Heaven II, and it gave me about a hundred error messages about INFO files being wrong.

If you can't load any mods at all (e.g. the mods that come with CIV), then I think you need to reinstall.  :-\

Have you tried loading the mods directly? You can create a new shortcut to launch a mod on start, without the need of restarting the game. You need to add "-mod <Mod Directory name>" in the shortcut.

Or you can use my utility here... it is a launcher for CIV, created with AutoHotKey. It searches for available mods and give you a list to choose from. The only problem with it is that it doesn't work with Steam version of Warlords (vanilla and Beyond the Sword are okay though).

BTW, Fall from Heaven 2 requires Beyond the Sword expansion. A very old version of FFH1 will work with vanilla.

I'd forgotten about that.  The mods that come with Civ 4 do work just fine.  It's only third party mods that don't load.

And there's a version of FFH2 specifically for vanilla Civ 4, that's the one that tried loading before crashing.

I don't know where it is too. Last game when I played Illians, Auric Ascended found Elohim's last city with a lone super longbowman. He's holding the Godslayer, has all city defending promotions and then more. Took me a while to gather up enough siege weapons to take him down.

I can't find anything about your problem, but make sure:

1) You have downloaded both the mod and media pack. They are two separate big downloads.

2) Patch CIV to the latest version. IIRC FFH requires some new features and fixes in the patches.

FFH is much more graphically intensive than the vanilla game, due to all the new models and textures being loaded. I had problems with that before - FFH kept making the video driver restart within one minute, while I could play the vanilla game for hours. Lowering graphics settings kept it running longer. In the end I changed from ATI 3870X2 to NVida EN9800GTX+ and that solved it.

Also, could you describe what kind of crash are you getting? What did you see, and are there any error messages?

Yup, my mods didn't work until I patched Civ to the latest version.

Argh. I want to play this mod, but it requires Beyond the Sword. :(
Curse you, expansion pack!

No it doesn't.  There's links to a vanilla version right below the expansion version.

I've tried patching, but it always says I already have the latest version.  The crash is just an ordinary, no info, drop to the desktop with a little "would you like to report this crash" window.  Just some critical program error.

But it just recently occurred to me that my version of Civ 4...  Well, it's the same exe that is supposed to be installed (cough).  I'll try a proper reinstallation.

Actually it does. The version for vanilla is VERY VERY VERY old and is no longer supported. Also there're almost no features.

Well, that might explain my crashed too then.  Thanks for the warning.

But the old version (0.23c) still contains enough to let you feel how different (and more interesting) it is from the vanilla game. e.g. The Kuriotates (limited to 3 cities with increased city radii, all others are settlements, a gold dragon unit), Mercurians (angels, get new angels for good people killed) and Infernal (demons, needs no food, get damned souls for evil people killed).

That could be the motivation you need to go get Beyond the Sword. ;)

Well, unless someone knows how to fix this, I think I'm just out of luck.

I've tried Fall From Heaven 2 and Fury Road, and neither works.  Both will load, and I can get through all of the settings and choosing a leader.  But for both mods, the program crashes back to desktop when it tries to actually make the world and start playing.

It's not graphic overload, because vanilla Civ4 runs on the highest settings just fine, and I tried turning graphics all the way down anyway.  I also know it's not mods in general, because all the stock stuff that comes with the expansion works fine.  I've got all the latest versions and patches.  Anybody know what might be wrong?

I'm pretty sure that Fury Road requires BTS to load.

Can you post your errors with FFH?

I know that.

There isn't any specific message, it's just the Windows standard "has encountered a problem and needs to close" pop-up.  Fury Road crashes as soon as I hit Start Game, FFH2 shows the loading screen and gets a progress bar going before it crashes.
