I love that they announce it's being kept in a "warehouse" in Las Vegas.  The perfect place to keep an emerald the size of an armchair.

I swear to god, if their is some sort of legendary criminal that pulls of the most epic heist of all time and gets away with a 850 pound emerald and gets outta the country. I know who to fucking worship now.

That would be some old fashioned supervillainy.

The problem being that once you steal an 850lbs emerald (and how the hell do you move the thing anyway?) there's not much you can do with it.  It's not like there are many other man-sized emeralds in the world to confuse it with when you try to sell it.

Of course, a proper supervillain gem-thief would just sit on the thing like the throne it is, rolling a glass of Chianti as the near-equal rival detective bursts into the hideout.

That looks like regular rock to me, not an emerald. Why didn't they chip away the rock?

Heh...."An 850-pound emerald said to be worth as much as $370 million.."
I wouldn't give a single dollar for this "stone" to be honest. What would be the point in buying this? However yeah, perhaps something is wrong with me, because -for example- I wouldn't spend a single dollar on paintings at all.  ;D

wait, if this thing weighs 850 kg and is only worth 371 mil dollars, doesn't that mean that a pound of emerald only values 400 000 dollars ?

this emerald must be of really poor quality, as gemstones that weight as much as a pound usually go way beyond just 0.4 mil

then again, the emerald is still raw an uncut
when cut, it will likely be worth more

No, I think the real reason that it's worth so much is that it's all together. You slice that thing up into a hundred peices, together it's not going to be worth the original.

Wait wait wait. 850 pounds is about $3000/$2000 dollars right? I would buy that if I had the money.
Clearly you are not familiar with the English measuring system.  That is not surprising.  It is a backwards, old system from not long after the medieval period.  The only people still clinging to it are those stupid, backwards, Americans from the U.S.

You mean a significant deal of the B12 forum goers? I don't blame you, beside you're not the first to complain about our way of measuring... at least I get bigger bottles of soda here.
But I'm an American.  Anyway, soda bottles here come in liters, which are metric units.  One of the few we use.  Yes, I think it's stupid we haven't switched to the metric system yet.

On topic, that's one huge emerald.  Dang.

They say that the UK is metric.
They are wrong.
Loads of things are still imperial (distances, beer ect) and most of the time everyone still talks in imperial measurements.

we need an old-school villain dressed as a dwarf to steal it now. Bonus evil points if they actually are a dwarf.

From what I read, the value hasn't been determined yet, so 371 million is just a guesstimate. Based on what, I have no idea.

Gems are always worth more *before* they're cut, rather than after, believe it or not. Atleast in modern times. The reason for that is the potential factor.

Once they're cut, they're cut, and you always lose some of the gross weight when gems are cut, and also, once they're cut, that means they can't be cut another way.

The gem is dwarfy to be sure, but you know what would be dwarfier?

If some guy snuck into the warehouse at night, whittled the gem to the size of a basketball, and then carved porn on it to make it totally undisplayable in public. THAT is the dwarfiest thing I can think of besides turning it into emerald twine for kittens to play with on their way to the slaughterhouse.

Than turning it into a special piece for a quad duo triple mega super ultra fry laser beam charge which fires a 10000ฒบบบบบ degree beam of what ever lasers fire, into the sun!

Anyway what would you do with such a gem?
