I haven't really been active on the forums for years, but here's one Finnish lurker reporting.

As people said, the results are relative to country size and Finnish people use the internet a lot. Hell, IRC was created in Finland, that might explain something. Also, roguelikes are surprisingly popular in Finland. We are a nation of nerds.

I am not really surprised. Finns & Swedes are spending half of their life on the internet.  ;D
However I am surprised that only a few finns are active on the forum.

Only HALF?! Gawd, the rest of 'em have some catching up to do! O.o

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..

Sounds like my kind of place! So, what're the rules for duo citizenship there?

You have to wrestle a moose to death while skating on a lake to become a citizen there, IIRC.

Easy, just gouge out it's eyes then strangle it to death.  Heck if you wanna be stylish break every one of it's limbs while yer at it!

Make sure you do it right at the start of nightfall though, wouldn't be good for the ice to melt while your have it's tail or left antler in a joint lock and you both be left to the mercy of the fish.

Only if the lake is two z-levels.
Wouldn't be very interesting to be left to the mercy of the fish if the fish are all dead.

Finland sure sounds like an interesting place to live, exaggerated, and unexaggerated. :>

india has the most people searching anything to do with spaceflight, I think that they're going to try exporting their overcrowded people into space so they'll have more room down here

If you click on Finland, it shows you a chart that seems to suggest that shortly into the fourth quarter of 2007, all of Finland simultaneously searched for Dwarf Fortress.

EDIT: Just what happened in the fall of 2007? TO THE DEVLOG!

The day Finland (and others) made a massive jump on the google trend graph seems to coincide exactly with the release of version 0.27.169.32a.

If I remember correctly, that was the first release with the z-axis (and many other features we associate with the current incarnation of DF).

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

We've also got a bunch of russians here, don't we? And what does Finland have in common with Russia? Both can get really cold during the winter so you don't really have anything better to do than be inside. Ergo, cold = DF.

Yep, funny but it's true I guess. It has something to do with the weather.  ;D
Also take a look at the competitive FPS games. Finns are extremely active in Counter Strike and CS: Source.

I did this on a couple other terms and Finland is at the top every time. This has to be some kind of glitch, or else everyone's getting their internet from Finland for some reason.

I noticed this too after searching some other trends. It's quite perplexing, indeed.

Here's a search I did that doesn't have Finnland in the top 10.
