Screwpump SelfDestruct.
« on: December 26, 2008, 03:42:50 pm »

O = constructed walls
m = magma, 1 Z level below.
M = Magma, same Z level.
g = Gear Assembly connected to above windmill.
G = Gear Assembly connected to lever.
P = front of pump
p = rear of pump

Code: [Select]
   MMMMM
MMMMMMMMMMM
OOOOOPOOOOO
mmmgGpmmmmm
mmmmmmmmmmm

Screwpump is stone block and wood.

I pulled the lever and started the pumping, I pulled the lever to stop it and my screwpump self destructed.  What can I do to prevent this shenanigans in the future?

It looks as though you're disconnecting the gear that allows you to build the pump in a hanging state. Put another gear between the pump gear and the windmill gear and disconnect that.

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Incorrect.  I have the exact same setup pumping water with no ill effects.  Screwpump has a stable base underneath both tiles.  The strangest thing is that I've used the Screwpump previously with this setup with no ill effe- wait a minute.

I've found the problem!

*save scums to just before the break down of his pumps*

XBirchen Pipe SectionX
XEnormous Maple CorkScrewX

Turning off a screw pump with wooden parts as it pumps magma damages the said wooden components until they eventually break.

Conveniently enough, glass is magma proof and if you've got sand and magma glass is an infinite resource.

I pump magma with all-glass screw pumps. I do it mostly because I imagine it looks pretty badass seeing magma flowing through glass openings and tubes.

No sand, I'm using copper.

Just tried and tested it.  Copper has no problems.

That's weird, copper is not magma proof.

Perhaps it was simply because your materials were flammable rather than a matter of magma-proofing?

IIRC, as long as magma don't flows onto the walkable bit, screw pump don't care what you uses in practice, since impassable face acts like construction.

Maybe the magma is heating adjacent tiles to a lesser degree, resulting in damage for wood but not copper?

I've never seen this happen before now, but it is more realistic. The AI is coding itself... marvelous genius, or foolhardy ruin?

Can't be.  I've had other pumps pump magma 24/7 without any damage resulting.
