Could somebody help me find a map/seed?
« on: December 23, 2008, 02:29:11 pm »

I need a major river with a waterfall that has sand and either magma or alot of trees nearby. No aquifier is a plus but not required. Also, stock large worlds preffered. Right now i'm at 7 worlds genned just for this purpose and all but 2 of them don't have major rivers at all, let alone major waterfalls.

If this request is fulfilled, a dwarfiness will ensue.

Extremely easy. Just increase the amount of desired rivers before and after generation

Hi!

Okay, I will try to find something like that.

However, in order to save a little bit of time, I will rather create medium sized-worlds.

I will start genning right away, but you may wish to comment on some assumptions I am making:

I will not try to preserve megabeasts, instead going for 1050 in development (probably a world without megabeasts).

I will try to have all races (dwarves, humans, elves, goblins, kobolds) to have at least one dominated site (goblins may be replaced by other races, in reality, of course (^_^;; ).

I will try to keep the number of sub regions low so as to maximize history density (helps to get nice engravings).

If you have any comments on these assumptions, or other requests, please post them here and I will try to work on them.

My latest site has an underground river with one or two small waterfalls, sand, magma, flux, no aquifer, and access to dwarves, elves, humans, and goblins. It may have HFS, but I'm not sure. You may want to give high priority to digging to the river, as the only pool on the surface is in a desert biome, and hence dries up pretty quickly. Also, the world is standard sized, rather than large.

If you're interested, I'll gladly post it.

Hi!

Sorry about using a double post, but since this is an important change, I need the extra-highlighting.

I have found a world/site that might be good enough for the requirements mentioned (okay, it is a medium world with a few odd settings):
Major river
Water fall (seemingly the major river itself)
Lots of trees
Sand
Does have aquifer (^_^;;
Magma unknown, but possible

For a closeup of the falls, look at the Map Archive.

The file itself can be downloaded at the Depot.

Deathworks

P.S.: As a special bonus, in many of the dark goblin fortresses in that world, there are actually goblins!

Thanks for the help but i don't think i can cram a glass fort in 2 z levels. I tried making my own costum map which consists of a strip of peaks on one side, a huge highland area across the middle and a strip of ocean at the other side, with erosion turned off, theoreticly resulting in several 50+ level drops near the shore. In the end, i found all my rivers running lateraly along my mountains, carving valleys more then 100 z levels deep but running perfectly horizontal from the point where their brooks spawned in a deep ravine to the point where they moved on the map(brooks spawns on z lvl 100, river at z lvl 100 when it runs off the map. Not a single brook on my perfectly flat landmass.

Hello!

Oh. I see. You wanted a tall waterfall...

Okay, I will try to find something like that.

My hints for something like that:
Height variation 1600
Erosion Cycle 0

(that's what created the one I posted)

Any hints about how high the waterfall needs to be?

(BTW, on the map I posted, there is another, smaller waterfall. Look in the SW corner in the map archive map - maybe that helps you a bit).

EDIT: The second waterfall

Hi!

Again, sorry about the double post, but looking closely at the world I uploaded, I found a site that might be more what you are looking for:

A major river going into a water fall at more than 20 tiles wide and going down 15 z-levels.

There might be a bit less wood, but it is actually the same river, just a little bit further downstream (north).

Map Archive

I hope this is sufficiently big for you. If not, then please do give some numbers (^_^;;

Deathworks

EDIT: The ruins shown there is the abandoned fortress I used to get the shots for the map archive. In the file, this site is empty! Just to avoid confusion.

Genning grants me an infinite stream of rejects and the downloaded version gives me a fatal error of a missing creasure body definition.

Ah!

I have applied the fix for the cats given in the wiki. Sorry about that.

Other than that, this was genned with a virgin download of 40d

Apllied the catfix too and now it works, thanks.

Note to self: damp stone and warm stone are 2 completely differnt things and i should not just resume diggng ater i receive the latter warning. Ah well, i now have a nice obsidian island to work from with my 2 remaining dwarves. Provided i can stem the flow before the entire valley floods with it that is.

Try 2: Magma breached without the map crashing due to it reaching the edge.

New problem: The waterfall somehow increases the flow ammount coming into the map, resulting in a second layer of water ontop of the original. This also reversed the current in the other river which is now 2 deep as well, resulting in the bottom level of my fort flooding and some very nasty framerate issues (average at 10 or so)

Proposed solution for try 3: dam the upper level of the flow immediatly at the point where the triburary joins the main river before fps becomes unmanageble. Then start a succesion game and make another poor bastard suffer when that inevitably overflows too.

Hi!

Good to hear that it works.
And there is even magma? Because a volcano was nearby I had hoped so, but with volcanic variance at max I wasn't sure.

About the flooding issue, this might be related to a philosophical question I had:

Where is the Aquifer layer?

Mind you, I haven't played the map, I only embarked to make the screenshots and then abandoned. But with 15 z-levels of waterfall - could it be that the waterfall goes through the aquifer? And if the aquifer was indeed open like this, what would happen?

This is just speculation, and I have no evidence. But if it was true, it might explain the flooding...

I guess I should make more efforts to find a site without an aquifer then (^_^;;

P.S.: And you hadn't put the cat bug fix in place beforehand. Shame on you! :) :) :)

I never embark with cats so i figured i didn't realy need it.

As for the flooding, parts of an aquifier exposed to air from the start don't flood. I think it's jst the fact that the outflow can't handle both the main river and the tributary.
