Bloodstone is green
« on: December 30, 2007, 11:29:00 pm »

Bloodstone, AKA Heliotrope, is actually a green mineral.  It gets its name from the red flecks that appear throughout it.  The flecks are either iron oxide or red jasper.

EDIT: Just realized that in Germany Bloodstone refers to Hematite, which can be red, but I think Hematite has its own inclusion elsewhere in DF.

If this is changed, then there would be constant spam in the glitch forum "Bloodstone is green when it should be red!"

Yeah, I remember looking at the picture from mindat.org back when I was deciding on the colors.  I think I might have even had green in the text file for a sec, but...  it just couldn't stay that way.

I gotta agree with it being red, I mean, it's a fantasy game... not everything has  emulate the real world perfectly. Besides, do you really want your Bloodstone Shrine to Armok to be green?

Why not? I mean as soon as the Elves see it they are going to hurl all over it anyway...  :D

I would think that your shrine to Armok would be red because of all the blood sacrifices you performed on it.  Nothing beats blood for red paint.

Here's an idea: Why not just call it Red Bloodstone?  People who don't know that Bloodstone is normally green probably won't think anything of it, and people who do know will figure that this is just some fantasy world version of it.

Make it green.
Realism is the priority when it comes to geology.

Maybe have some in-game mention of it to avoid spam.

As long as the symbol and color associates strongly with what it is trying to represent, I'll say it'd done it's purpose.  Can we expect simply colored ascii symbols to be as reflective as say a picture/photo? Not feasible.

but, if we bug Toady enough, maybe he'll work on custom ore gfx tiles that will allow the red specks in green thing... Just not sure whether this falls under "Item gfx" category...

Of course it does.

And I hope he doesn't bother. This is a small issue more of personal preferences*, and better left for when Core50 is complete so people can edit it to suit themselves.

*Is bloodstone modeled off the real thing or a random fantasy gem named for its deep crimson?
