Is glass clothing possible?
« on: December 23, 2008, 11:23:03 am »

Just that.
I consider myself an extreme beginner at modding, so forgive me if I ask pretty basic questions.

I am suddenly extremely motivated to add glass eyewear (glasses, monocles) to my game. Preferably craftable in the usual glass workshop and wearable, and limited to clear or crystal glass materials. Also, the possibility of artifact monocles is ridiculously alluring.

However, upon trying to look up how to do this, I got entirely lost and am beginning to suspect it might not be as straightforward as I had hoped.

Tell me, is it even possible to do what I had in mind?

I suppose you could do that, what with smelter reactions and all, but they might start wearing  glass panties if you do.

There are ways to do this. Hmmm.

I imagine you can edit the reactions, although it'll happen in the smelter rather than the glass furnaces.

[REACTION:MAKE_MONOCLE]
[NAME:make clear glass monocle]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:1:ROUGH:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_CLEAR:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:1:HELM:MONOCLE:GLASS_CLEAR:NO_MATGLOSS]
[FUEL]

That will return a no-quality clear glass monocle, assuming you have made a hat named that. Now excuse me while I ponder further ways to do this...

[ITEM_HELM:ITEM_HELM_MONOCLE]
[NAME:monocle:monocles]
[WEIGHT:1]
[VALUE:15]
[BLOCKPOWER:1]
[LAYER:UNDER]
[COVERAGE:5]
[LAYER_SIZE:25]
[LAYER_PERMIT:50]
[MATERIAL_SIZE:1]
[HARD]

[REACTION:MAKE_MONOCLE_CLEAR]
[NAME:make clear glass monocle]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:1:ROUGH:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_CLEAR:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:1:HELM:MONOCLE:GLASS_CLEAR:NO_MATGLOSS]
[FUEL]

[REACTION:MAKE_MONOCLE_CRYSTAL]
[NAME:make crystal glass monocle]
[SMELTER]
[REAGENT:1:ROUGH:NO_SUBTYPE:GLASS_CRYSTAL:NO_MATGLOSS]
[PRODUCT:100:1:HELM:MONOCLE:GLASS_CRYSTAL:NO_MATGLOSS]
[FUEL]

Then add [HELM:ITEM_HELM_MONOCLE] to the dwarven entity file and you ought to be able to turn raw glass into monocles at the smelter.

I think that's the only way to do this right now, sadly.

I suppose that will do. Thanks a lot!

One question: Are there any limitations to this method? i.e. Will fey dwarves still have a chance of making artifact monocles?

Yes, they can make artifact monocles, but they might make them out of rock.

Actually, since they're headwear, they wouldn't make them out of rock, but rather cave spider silk.

So I will have introduced monocles and eyepatches effectively at the same time. I have no complaints.

If you wanted to have eyepatches that you can make anytime, just add [LEATHER] to the monocles... I think.

Or you could just mod in "fiber glass" as a new type of cloth.

Do you really want to have a +carp leather monocle+? Because that's what it'll be called.

Also, if you mod in "fiber glass" you'll have to make monocles SOFT which means you can have pig tail monocles.

Just kidding.  Fiber glass is a skin irritant.  Dwarves would, of course, be resistant to that due to the layers of blood and mud and vomit, but their eyes would still be vulnerable.
