Is it possible to turn off Immigrants?
« on: December 22, 2008, 03:51:10 pm »

I'm going to start a hermit story on another forum, and I'm wondering, is it possible to turn off immigrants? I've looked in the init files, but there's no option to turn them off.

Clearly you didn't look too hard.

[POPULATION_CAP:7]

Note that this has the annoying tendency to bring immigrants anyway for some reason.

So I'll guess I'll have to kill every 6 immigrants that come then? I was just looking for a straight out [IMMAGRANTS:No] Option.

I'm pretty sure that if there are no living dwarf civs in your world then you don't get any migrants either. There was a topic about such a world some time ago.

I think it's a vastly amusing thought that elephants are so afraid of heights that when Dwarves invented the Z-axis, they couldn't bear to face dwarves in combat anymore.

You should try setting it to [POPULATION_CAP:1] The game forces those first 7 in at the start, but after that it should be no problem. You may have to deal with a few migrants sometimes, but nothing major. Just "lower the bridge" to on them.

Anything given enough time and money is possible.

Destroying the solar system should be possible in a couple thousand years.

but [POPULATION_CAP:0] or [POPULATION_CAP:1]  Should reduce the begging swine that appear on your doorstep.

* forgot to mention, if you hit up dwarf fortress tweak in the link in my sig, you can adjust your starting band of merry dwarfs to only 1 as well.

Does this prevent births using this technique?

The first two migrant waves are hardcoded.

This thead is almost three years old.  Technically, we should probably be glad that idgarad looked for an existing instance of his question rather than starting another thread about it, but I'm kinda surprised this is the thread he found.

To actually answer idgarad's question, no, it doesn't prevent children, but the option in the init files to turn those off would do exactly that - look for the child cap.  But as jaxy15 says, the first two waves of migrants will still show up.

It's the first one that Google pulls up so I figured it would be the ideal one to append the birth question to.

If your population is at or exceeds the cap, no further migrants will come and no further pregnancies will occur until the population drops below the cap. Migrants already on their way will still arrive (are they tracked across the world map?) and pregnancies already in progress will continue. Also the first two migrant waves are hardcoded and will always arrive.

Given current events, I've altered my profile pic and I'm sorry it took so long to fix. If you find the old one on any of my accounts elsewhere on the internet, let me know by message (along with the specific site) and I'll fix. Can't link the revised avatar for some reason.
