I thought you were supposed to be the conservative.  Isn't an efficient, business-like government exactly what you wanted.

Efficient?  So you think giving themselves a raise will make them more efficient?

Is it efficient when CEOs do the same thing?

So that justifies the government doing it?

I love the self-righteous Libertarians.  They are Liberals in sheeps clothing, and Ron Paul is a nut.

We are trying to be objective here.
Key questions to ask is:

-Where did the data come from? Is it reliable?
-Have experts peer reviewed the book?
-How was the study conducted? Was it cross-sectional, was the sample size representative of the whole?

Quick note: journalists shouldn't be relied upon for book validity.

Looking away from politics, there’s evidence that one of the most generous groups in America is gays. Researchers believe that is because they are less likely to have rapacious heirs pushing to keep wealth in the family.

It’s true that religion is the essential reason conservatives give more, and religious liberals are as generous as religious conservatives. Among the stingiest of the stingy are secular conservatives.

European countries seem to show more compassion than America in providing safety nets for the poor, and they give far more humanitarian foreign aid per capita than the United States does. But as individuals, Europeans are far less charitable than Americans.

According to Google’s figures, if donations to all religious organizations are excluded, liberals give slightly more to charity than conservatives do. But Mr. Brooks says that if measuring by the percentage of income given, conservatives are more generous than liberals even to secular causes.

Conservatives also appear to be more generous than liberals in nonfinancial ways.

I have a strong feeling that the results are numerically sound, but should not and cannot be interpreted because of the scope of the survey. The interpretation would be meaningless, since it would be impossible to statistically isolate the results from clouding factors.

This thread feels oh so pointless, as it was not meant to be a discussion of the book but an essential trolling of the liberals of this forum. I'm glad us various nonsensicalians can weather through these experiences, but I think the forum would benefit if people would stop creating threads like this.

Definitely agree about this being a rather well-played trolling attempt cleverly disguised as an actual discussion. Then again, the topic title "Liberals are cheapskates" kind of gave it away, especially being as how (I think) most of the denizens of this forum are liberalish.

A clearer indication is definitely going to be religion, and there are certainly more religious conservatives than religious liberals, so... yeah.
