Yeah.

Oh, hey. Ancient magic might be in, right?

So ancient portals would probably be there forever?

Eventually, say 100 years into world gen, the surroundings might decay. Maybe a portal in an area would turn the area Haunted?

Not a chance, the gobbos will have their shaman do the "earthquake dance" and crumble your gate.

Slightly off-topic but....
Hm....actually this is a very good idea. Gates/Portals could be created in worldgen at random places in the world. Adventurers or even armies could use those to travel between the portals. I guess it's needless to say that "activating" a portal shouldn't be easy. Only the mightiest magicians should be able to active it. Various rare materials should be also needed to perform the activation ritual.

Why at random places? I'd say you'd need some semi-divine entity (sentient megabeasts perhaps?) to do the trick, since it's not likely for a portal to pop up by pure chance.

I have a feeling that a portal would take a whole lot more power than could be normally available. Physics, guys.

Yes physics but we talk about magic here. Magic != Pyhsics. Or lets say Magic can manipulate and alter the rules of Physics. Heck we have "Spirits of fire" and Animal man, not to mention adamantine or totally misbehaving creatures.

"Portal" and teleport spells would be awesome but have to wait till magic arc i think.

Depends. If magic can break the rules of Thermodynamics, then you could get enough power to transport an entire army over a mountain range by freezing a lake ;)

Or portals to sphere aligned planes are responsible for sphere aligned areas...

Well if you don't want to face a mighty Goblin Wizard then don't start near an area with a powerful Goblin Wizard
