Ok, see, this is a great problem I'm having with DoomRL. Everyone keeps talking about these "Wall Tricks TM" as if they were some sort of divine intervention and superpower-granting radiation combined, but either I'm too thick to do them correctly, or it's something alltogether more sinister. I'm going to use several quick diagrams to show how I'm trying to do the things and I'd be quite grateful if someone offers help.

In this situation, I should be able to fire at them without them firing, right? Well, either it's not working (using shotguns mostly, because with other weapons they come into melee and carve me up), or I'm not doing it right. Cacodemons, for one, love to fire at me from such positions. Another example :

Again, the impertinent demon in question often manages to fire off at least one shot at me, even with my walltrickery. Are combat shotguns especially unsuited to this task? And if so, what weapon should I use in such cases? I read a strategy guide on the DoomRL forums, but it just shows diagrams such as mine and doesn't really explain anything.
One more problem I'm having is enemies firing at me before I've seen them. This is especially true for former sergeants and imps, and even with shotgun scouting I sometimes fail to find them until I've eaten a bullet. I realise this might be an intentionally designed mechanic, in which case disregard my whimpering, but I can't help but feel I'm doing something wrong.
For example, for the Cyberdemon I did the following :
oooooooooC
@XXX
XXX

The line of "o" representing my firing trajectory. He just fired a missile that hit me and destroyed part of the wall. That was on Not Too Rough, though I don't think difficulty makes enemies smarter.
What gives? Should I have fired once or twice, then retreated to the bottom of the pillar? I think, however, that he was at least as fast as me (in Gothic armour, had one spare red, too).
