That's not bad. That's not bad at all. Try running twice that distance over lava.

I had an envirosuit.

For some reason, I had the strange urge to slap bulk mods onto my BFG.  It now holds 220 cells.  That's 5 shots with change, people.

Mortuary cleared.

Ok, should I enter the lava pits or not? I have plenty of armour...

To anyone having trouble running the game on Vista: do NOT put in in Program Files, just unzip in to a folder on your desktop or something (I've got it in a sub-folder of downloads). It runs fine on my vista laptop, whether I run the .exe or the .bat.

I still haven't manages to make it to Cybie in this version... I did do rather well with a pistol build in AoLT the other day. Got my bronze badge for it.

That's weird. I put my games in Program Files - only the big installed ones though, like Dark Crusade and TF2. Everything else goes straight to the desktop for easy access.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This was an ammochain build, which I now enjoy even more.

I'm really getting the hang of the Arena, those cacodemons aren't so intimidating anymore. I think I got through all three rushes and only got hit once. All I know is that this is the only way of getting a guaranteed rocket launcher, which I need for doing the wall. I love me some backpack, yessir.

What's interesting is that I REALLY thought I was going to die after doing the Wall, which literally exhausted all my resources, despite going as in prepared as possible. What ensued on the next level was me being chased by a Hell Knight and an imp, on critically low health, making the most epic mad dash in the history of mankind to a large health globe, dodging something like 10 attacks in a row in what I can only call a miracle.

Cyberdemon was a pushover with the inventory which I had pimped out to take on Carmack. Too bad I had to settle for little Cybie. I'm pretty sure I need invulnerability, but now that I look at the mortem map, it looks like the staircase isn't covered in stone. Could I have used my Homing Phase Device to bypass Cybie altogether and tackle Carmack? Probably not, but... gah! I need to know!

(For that matter, if you have Vista, don't put anything in Program Files at all. Seriously. Just stick 'em in C.)
What I ususally do is, with my larger drive, where most of my programs and documents have migrated to anyhow, I have tons of categories, with many sub-categories within each.

And place games mostly related to each system accordingly. The Emulation directory is just as complex with the emulators and roms separated. This system is by far the most effective/organized thing I've done with my computer. Hell, it makes mantainence hell of alot easier. What especially helps is using this for programs like WinDirStat, where it gives you a visual representation of your hard drive; this REEEEEAAALLLY simplifies everything.

I also don't bother giving one name for certain programs. Especially if I have the Winrar option to just copy the name of the file as a directory. Reason: Version tracking. I do this with DF now, with maybe a followup description for any modding of the files (DF #_#_## -- no_cave_ins).

And to explain all the underscores; those make it so if anything isn't a category, the categories are always on top. Add additional underscores to increase priority as well.

Sorry if this was a bit of a wall of text. But this method is super-effective for just about any purpose. Better than just sticking things in C: (or other base directory, like categories, or drive base). Actually, The system makes sure the base directory is virtually empty (folders, and maybe an instructional text file aside).

I have Vista, and this method works like a dream for just about any program I have. DoomRL included.

It also helps keep my desktop rather neat and clean minimizing shortcuts.

I try to keep my stuff sorted, but I inevitably just put stuff where ever.  It makes it very hard to find things.

On an unrelated note, up 'till now my speakers have very soft.  Now that I have my laptop back I can use my earphones, which may make it possible for me to hear the sounds monsters allegedly make.

On a related matter, up 'till now I've never used shotgun scouting.

Also, I shouldn't play so impatiently.  I believe my last two deaths were COMPLETELY avoidable, had I taken the time between/during fights to look at how much life I had left.  My characters were doing pretty well, too.  :\

Hilarious YASD.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

As you can see, I was trying out the pistol build on that guide linked a little while back. It was going well - extremely well, in fact, despite the fact that I was only two levels into hell and was rapidly running out of ammo. Full health, two modded red armours, and Malek's Armor. I walk down the stairs, take two steps, and - an Archvile appears, immolates me and the barrel I'm standing next to, which obviously blows up and kills me on the spot. I didn't even get a chance to fire.

I had 10 stacks two levels prior. The issue is that once you get to the hell levels, former captains (and regular former humans, of course) seem to stop spawning, or at least become very rare. Former commandos do spawn, but with packs of sergeants, nothing more useful.

That's also likely one of the reasons why shotgun builds can be so ammo-effective - they get a consistent source of ammo throughout the entire game, so a shotgunner won't ever need more than a few stacks at once.

I finally gave a go at the newest version and I must admit
Kornel is my programming authority! (Sorry Toady, but he's my fellow country-man)

I just wonder, is it possible to finish the game with shotguns?
Because I got a hang on a double shotgun, and got a trait that gave me the ability to reload it on the go. But later when I got rocket launcher and BFG it wasn't such a great weapon...

Double shotgun has a piss-poor range.

I wouldn't stick with 'em later on.  Early game is awesome though.
