It's very hard at the start.  Basically, this game will own you--right up until you get a combat shotgun and a couple of medkits, at which point it should start getting a lot easier.

I die more on levels 2-3 than on levels 4-10, I think..

I don't die early anymore, it's those damn Archies that get me. And Baron hordes out of nowhere.

Early game is much easier of you grab two shotguns and keep one prepared and loaded. You can clear Hells arena easy like that and using the corner trick.

I just hope I get lucky, find an Advanced Double Shotgun early on, pump it up with mods.

Fuck that, advanced chaingun with 4 accuracy and 4 speed mods with ammochain. Infinite super fast accurate dakka.

Clearly you aren't familar with firestorm mod then. +2 shots from any multi shot weapon, which includes the double shotty. 5X damage with like 12d4 + shottyman and army of the dead. Yeah, you might run out of ammo, but at 60d4 a shot, I don't think its a problem at that point.

Yeah. Throw on three power mods and it becomes something like 75d4

Man, plasma rifles are freaking worthless!  Trashy accuracy, burns through ammo, and hauling one around just to overload it still isn't very effective.  From what I can tell they're only good if you find an advanced one early on.

On the other hand, I've learned that a good BFG never goes to waste.  I used to skip special levels with a BFG if I was doing a special chaingun or shotgun build or something, in hopes of getting better loot on a standard level, but really...when you run into two archviles or mancubi, or two archviles BEHIND two mancubi, the only prescription is more BFG.  Chaingun is NOT enough, even with six mods and ammochain.

Use Ammochain with the Plasma Rifle. Duh.

Yeah... Ammochained plasma rifles are damn horrific. More so with levels in Triggerhappy and speed mods.

I have been converted. I died on the first level and only killed 5 people.

I still think that chaingun beats plasma rifle, because more accuracy = actually doing more damage :x

But then, if you have an advanced ANY weapon, all bets are off.

It's just some good ol' NVS (New Version Syndrome).  Nothing too weird about that.  Can you imagine the flood of players that would come about from the new step of Incursion?  Or, heck, our very own DF?
