I asked on the official forums, and score is determined by how much HP you have at the very end, and since the thermie catapults you into the thousands of negative hp...

Anyway, I thought I'd try out Nightmare! difficulty, and all I have to say is one thing: WOW, it's really fun! This is exactly the kind of frantic and desperate action I'm looking for.

I guess that my next feat will be to beat a regular Nightmare! game, and then show my work.

Nightmare is a completely different beast then Ultraviolent. I've actually heard that once you figure it out, you can beat the game pretty easily on it compared to UV, but all the angels require new strategies.

Dang, it's been awhile since I last played. I'll maybe play and post stats before I leave town Thursday. Wish me luck; on DoomRL, that is.

I'm gonna go ahead and call this a lie and a damn lie.

This is as far as I've gotten, on three separate tries:

Look at that map! I can't survive! Only level 12 too!

I went for two levels of eagle eye at the start since I very quickly find that you get access to chainguns extremely quickly, and being able to land every hit is VITALLY important.

My usual camping strategy is completely uneffective, since monsters are reviving constantly, and you should treasure every single health up since the strength of powerups is doubled for Nightmare!... and boy is that necessary to even survive.

I forget where I heard it, but some of the guys over on the DMRL forums said something along those lines. It requires completely different tactics.

I was looking through the official forum, and I found a guy named Fanta Hege that offers a few helpful tips. Allow me to quote him verbatim:

Well considering I don't see any of thise types of topics here, I though I'd go a head and make one for it.

So basicly in this topic, share little tips and tricks you might've learned and noticed that can make the play slightly easier for the rest of us!

I'll start ofcourse with thise few things;

Combat Shotgunning them hell knights and barons, taking the full advantage of the weapon.
Normally, when you meet up with a hell knight or baron, you might want to hide for cover and fire them from a far with your combat shotty. This ofcourse is the most viable way of doing it, but sometimes you just don't have a good cover or the time for it. So with this trick, you can take out a hell knight with one full clip, using the shotguns correct potential.
Shotguns are a close/medium range weapons, not long range marksmanship. The closer you are, more you hit on them and at blank point range, the damage is enormous! When you meet up a hell knight, fire, zig zag in when you pump your new shell, fire again! And continue. This works for barons too, but is more dangerous unless you have some iron/tan or SOAB packed up.
==> "Stun locking". Did you know that when you're against a hell knight or a baron with only 1 - 2 squares away from them, they will want to try meelee you more then shoot? Using this as an advantage you can "stun lock" them with your shottyguns knockback. When they are face to face, fire, they will go about 1 - 2 squares back and try close in on you again. Ofcourse they do not always do this, but most of the times they do. The further they get knocked back, the larger the fail rate of this trick is. However if you have cover and plenty of ammo, it is still recommended to shoot hellknights and barons from a far.

Making the spider lair is a piece of cake.

Note; Only works in normal games and non weapon limiting games.

So Spiders lair, the one last place you'll ever want to go due of the plasmagun buff. Now you might ask "Piece of cake?!? BS!" But if you have a BFG.. There is a simple way to make thise spiders laughable.

So as you know, when you enter the lair, you're in the middle, with 4 teleporters and surrounded by spiders. Here's the trick; Shoot in one of corner spiders with your BFG9000.

This sunnova in the brackets for exsample (not completely accurate picture)

When the BFG hits, it will break the 3 teleporters near by, leaving the furthest one from the explosion left.

Run to it.
Memorise where you teleported.
Step one step away from it.
Pull out a rapid fire weapon or a meelee weapon.
Wait for spider to walk on the left over tele to appear.
Kill the spider as it can't use its ranged weapon
???
Profit!

Most of the spiders that weren't effected by the BFG hit on the start will wander off to the tele sooner or later, the spiders on the most down corner where you shot the BFG at will most likely not enter the tele, but considering you'll take out fairly over half of them that were in a good shape this way, cleaning out the weakened minor ones shouldn't be a problem afterwards. Specialy since you get a lot of food for your BFG.

Enjoy free loot.

And here's another post of his that's also helpful:

Sorry for the double post but here's another little good tactic for the people who might want to take the wall easier.

You're going to need the following for it;
Some armor, health, DOUBLE SHOTGUN and rocket launcher obviously with rockets.

So to start off, when it comes to the wall you all probably know how the thing works.
This little tactic of mine is basicly taking the advantage of the art of cover, splash damage and meelee radious.

To start off, find the wall, explore a bit and then start making a tunnel on the down side.
However, make sure you shoot it diagnoly downwards! You want to make a good clean tunnel for this. However before you blow out the final red wall, now is the tactical part.
Don't shoot it just there. Shoot it slightly away, only destroy one block.

Ideally to this, not completely accurate but you get the picture!

So why double shotgun? Now you know why.
Peek by and say hi to the barons there, shoot with the double shotgun and you will hear the biggest scream in DoomRL ever. Now the barons that might react to you will however usualy be packed and hurt themselves + others if they attack. When you've fired once, retread bit back up, reload and go back to fire again.
You might now and will most likely become face to face with a baron, but double shotty's knock back will throw them back away and you will only take meelee damage.
Repeat untill they're all dead and enjoy backpack.

If a baron follows you to your tunnel, deal with it like you would deal with a solo baron, retreat further and fire away!

Note; On N! and UV this tactic might be slightly harder to pull off due of the archviles but it should still work somewhat well.

Note2; If baron happens to break the hole, as in make it too large, then I'd suggest backing off and deal with them further away or retreat as a whole, if you lose all your cover, the wall can become way too hard to pull off.

Something divinely ironic happened today: I started a game of Doomrl to show my friend what Doomrl was, since I had been telling him how good it was, and I end up completing getting a badge I had been striving for for quite some time. The Ass-Kicking Marine!

He played for 1 hour, 56 minutes and 17 seconds.
He didn't like it too rough.

He killed 615 out of 615 hellspawn. (100%)
This ass-kicking marine killed all of them!

 He saved himself once.

It was a melee build, but I hoarded plasma cells to use with the BFG, which was very helpful in eliminating the packs of archviles/revenants/mancubi/arachnotrons that appear in the late game.

Though I am quite sad that my friend laughed openly upon seeing that Doomrl was ASCII and not a more graphically impressive game.

I only had like FOUR different ways of resolving this situation! I could have 1) used my power modded BFG. 2) used my rocket launcher to scout, 3) Used my phase device which is very clearly there and not in my imagination, or 4) not been a dumbass and run right into the center, where you KNOW that all the monsters are hanging out. Nope, I just HAD to go for the stairs at the cost of everything else, including my own life.

Such a good character too. Let this be a reminder to you guys (and me), weigh your options before committing to a decision. You have all the time in the world, plus a BFG.

I redownloaded yesterday.
I actually love Double Shotguns.
Also, having the Butcher's Cleaver as my secondary, when I can't be bothered to reload, works damn well.

I loved double shotguns too, they're very powerful. However, I have a new love now, and that's scouting with the combat shotgun. I have fond memories of my double shotgun, but the dropoff it too significant to scout with it.

However, with a juggler setup, you could have two doubles, and switch between them without penalty.

Also, a new trick I learned is that if you have juggler, you can switch out your weapon for any other weapon you may have by using the numpad, where each key represents a different weapon.

You have to get used to it, but it's slightly faster than taking a weapon out of your inventory, and it's instantaneous if you have the juggler trait.

So, without moving a single square, you can fire continuously by having two ordinary shotguns equipped to both weapon slots, and a combat shotty and a double shotty in your inventory, where you can then go:

shotgun
instant z
shotgun
press 4 for instant combat shotty
take a shot off that
press (5, I think) for instant double shotty

and, purportedly, this works really well. I've yet to make it work due to all the extra brainpower it requires, which seems largely unnecessary.

Basic melee demons aren't too bad with a shotty, anything over them sucks though with their ranged weapons.

Ya, Juggler makes quickkey and swapping instant. What that really means is that you can have 2 double shotties, a regular, a combat, a rocket launcher, and a BFG all chainfiring from one to the next. Pop up next to an archvile? double, double, regular, combat(by now its probably past your vision/dead), rocket, BFG. That should definitely take care of everything.

One MAJOR thing I've discovered is that all mobs move towards the center of the map. Get to an edge and wait, and after a couple hundred turns, 90% of the mobs will be in one spot.

God! That was close. Like, REALLY CLOSE! As you can see, I was almost dead there when I finished Cybie with my last resort blast from my BFG.

You see, I had been gradually been bled dry of my resources through the last few levels of hell. The severity of the monster spawns NECESSITATED that they be taken out with extreme prejudice, and that lead to me being a little low on plasma cells, and a few mishaps drained me of my health packs.

Really, to let you know, Ultraviolence requires a different strategy than the other modes. You'll see I have quite a few different weapons, and an extra plasma rifle. This was so that I could switch strategies on the fly, while maintaining heavy firepower. I kept the rocket launcher to reshape the levels and create VITAL shortcuts, but I never used it for offensive purposes, as it's too slow. I also kept the combat shotty with a single stack of ammo for scouting purposes, and trust me, scouting is EXTREMELY important when theres the chance of you running into a pack of revenants that instakill you in a single turn. Getting the BFG was a must, because even though they consume plasma like nobody's business, you won't see anything else chew through the hoards of high level monsters like this baby can, and trust me, you WILL need to chew through them to get to the exit eventually. Don't be hesitant to use it either, while the BFG is expensive to use, you'll see that there's some groups of monsters which are simply too big to dispose of in any other way, and learning when it's best to whip it out WILL save your life.

One thing you HAVE to learn is that you should NOT hoard your plasma weaponry, thinking you can save it for a better day. No, you have to discard the impulse to save your best stuff, because that plasma was made to kill monsters, and that's what you should use it for. In fact, ALWAYS keep a plasma rifle as your secondary in case you accidentally find yourself in an uncomfortable position that only gratuitous amounts of violence applied in a very short time-frame can solve. Not kidding, you never know when you will need to kick alot of ass at a moment's notice, so keep your ass-kicker on hand.

Now, I'm not saying to use the plasma rifle all the time, no, because even though plasma cells are made abundant very early on, you should only seriously consider using them on Barons and up. So don't be stingy, health is MUCH more important than plasma cells.

I'm glad I found a good set of uniques, the phaseshift boots gave me some free speed (although it could have been acquired by agility modding a regular pair of boots), the advtech mod gave me an advanced plasma rifle, and the onyx armor helped alot against Cybie, who can normally chew through even really awesome armor like nothing.

My build is a little unusual as it doesn't have a master trait. However, thinking practically, I realized that NO master trait was worth the hardship of bending over backwards for in these conditions, not even Ammochain, especially with how early some monsters would spawn. You'd be facing Hell Knights at level 3, so I decided that every bullet counts, and I got 2 levels of Eagle Eye first, which allowed me to use RUN while holding a rapidfire weapon and maintain an edge of accuracy whlie boosting my evasion and speed. Then I went for two levels of Tough as Nails, and then badass, and then another TaN. Badass is simply awesome, a must have, but more importantly, TaN is important because every level of it makes it seem like you're wearing a higher level of permanent, indestructible armor, which is invaluable. Then I got three levels of Son of a Bitch in a row, as that trait allows me to finish off monsters much more quickly, and with fewer bullets, so I'm essentially conserving both ammo and health with it. After that, I went for finesse, and then juggler, because being able to instantly switch between your weapons is a BIG deal when a single turn can spell life or death. If I hadn't gotten juggler, then Cybie might have been able to finish me off. Then, lastly, I got a level of hellrunner, but in retrospect, maybe I should've gotten Ironman instead.

Also, one trick that I finally got to exploit in this run was the free Mortuary heal. Basically, I got to the stairs to the Mortuary in fairly bad shape, and immediately thought "Yeah, I won't survive if head down there..." and then I looked in my inventory, and remembered that I had a homing phase device. With this in mind, I headed down into it, grabbed some free armor and health, homing phased to the exit and skidaddled out of there!

It was tough, it required patience, planning, and ALOT of firepower, but I beat Ultraviolence! This was definitely the hardest thing I've done yet, as even doing Angel of 100 wasn't this hard. Now, let's see if I can do Nightmare!

How do you get other "species"?
I assumed it was by completing it with a prior species (i.e Complete with Human, unlock ???)
