Stronghold 2, your help please
« on: December 21, 2008, 01:46:22 pm »

I've been looking at Stronghold 2 for a while, trying to make up my mind on whether I should buy it or not. The combat system looks good, even though archers and crossbowmen look a little tweaked. The building system looks functional (unlike other games of a similair nature) and the graphics are gorgeous. I want to know, are there games just like it that you'd recommend over it, is there a better game later in the Stronghold series, just any opinion of it you have will help to form my opinion a little better. Any game-breakers? major bugs? etc. Thanks everyone.

Sadly, Stronghold 2 has got some nasty problems.  The way your military units do their things, for example.

If you haven't tried the demo yet, I suggest you do so.  If you're fine with everything in there, feel free to pick it up.

Otherwise, play the original.

I couldnt get it to run with my old 8600gts, for the life of me. It ran on my older setups just fine.

All my google fu couldnt solve the problem and I couldnt tell what was wrong, it was the only program being bitchy.

Other than that, when it ran back then... I really enjoyed castle building (over stronghold 1) because it looks so nice, it felt a bit like playing with legos  ;D

I hated combat in that game, but just building a castle... that was fun. How you can integrate several workshops into the walls an everything, you can build some neat stuff.

I'm gettin it just based off of what Puck said. I really love games where you can build up some really nice things, and then get the fun of fighting desperately against your enemy to keep it that way. Dwarf Fortress got me hooked that way, and now this game has got my attention. I'm downloading the demo right now, and I don't think the militiary thing will bug me that much. Alot of catapults and crossbows will keep me safe (saw a video of 10 catapults taking down near 15 people each shot, and I saw a video of 1,000 crossbowmen taking down 15,000 spearmen on a flat plain, no cover or anything). Downloading the demo right now, very eager about this.

Apart from eye candy, strongholds fortress building is really bland compared to DF. Don't be too excited, so, yeah, get the demo first to see if it tickles your fancy ;)

Oh and something really important... there was something weird about the patches;
I think if you want to play it in LAN you cannot install the newest patch, you need the one before that or something. That always struck me as odd, and may not affect you. But if you ever plan on playing it on a LAN, search a bit first on da intarwebz.

Maybe it even has changed by now, but back then, the most recent patch removed lan functionality.

Ive got stronghold warchest in my house somewhere, I liked the first one and I was all for buying the second one but it got to many bad reviews so I never did. (In saying that on a daily basis I hold less faith in the big corporate reviews)

Don't bother. That game lags even on good modern computers.

Fun fact... If you don't patch the retail version of the game, your allies destroy your walls.

I almost hate that game.(2 not 1/crusader)

Stonghold 2 is pretty fun but crusader is a lot better even if it has bad graphics and sounds its still better.

Also Legends SUCKS. Its rigged for the ice people and it has a bad castle building system (not as many buildings and a lot of other things).
I have every stronghold game expect the first one and here is my order of best to worst

crusader, stronghold 2, Legends.

Yah, I didn't like some key features that I noted on the demo. First, no boats?! Such great potential is wasted with that. Second, is the rate at which enemies produce. It seems my opponents are all able to, with castles and estates the exact same as mine, summon 9001 spearmen at will, and sick them at my castle. I'm gonna look into crusaders, hopefully it improves on some things.

Well, in the middle ages, it was very hard to build bigger boats because noone knew anything about that anymore. There are Pictish boat warriors though.

I've always thought the combat was horrible in both Stronghold games.

No collision between units + apparently simple pathfinding = What's the point in having ten ladder carriers when sieging a castle if I can have one and my entire army can go up that one ladder at the same time. Oh wait, it doesn't matter because even if I decide to set up ladders all over the walls they'll still only use one or two instead of all of them.

Or what about the only formation in the game being the Snake.

Stronghold was a great game, along with Crusaders. 2 and Legends are horrible.

you bring 10 laddermen instead of one, because you have a higher chance that one will actually deploy a ladder before being shot.

other than that, youre right, of course.

I quite liked Stronghold 2. But yeah, it's not as good as DF. Also the catapults were crazy overpowered.. one catapult could easily tear down a whole castle and everyone on the walls! A lot of multiplayer games agree that catapults shouldn't be used.

It's a great multiplayer game. If you want to go castle building, play DF. But it's great against a friend.. the best castle vs castle game out there I know of.
