The Art of Gobojitsu?
« on: December 21, 2008, 01:39:05 am »

Today I was minding my own business in my current 5-year mostly-aboveground fort, when suddenly:
"A VILE FORCE OF DARKNESS HAS ARRIVED!"

Now, I'm somewhat worried as I count 4 squads of gobbos, 2 led by a Master Swordmaster/Crossbowmaster (I'm most worried about the Crossbowmaster) along the edges of the map, ready to charge in the midst of my fortress. So I zoom in to my central keep/mess hall to lock everyone inside. Then I see that an entire squad of gobbos is already inside of my super-duper-well-guarded keep/mess hall. Past my reserve guards and markedswarves right next door in their Barracks. Even past my squad of Champion Wrestlers right outside. And nobody has even made so much as a peep about being ambushed or even cancelling jobs due to the gobbos. Unless my breed of goblins has learned the ancient art of gobojitsu, and snuck through 50 working dwarves into the heart of my fortress, i'd call this a bug.

I should probably also note that my last batch of migrants appeared from nowhere seemingly as well. Except that they teleported through a square just outside my fortress, one at a time. From total nowhere. I remember reading something about this problem before, and it possibly being caused by oddly proportioned maps or fortress sites. Just to add to the information about this problem, I am using a completely square site. My fortress is just south of the center, so that cannot be the cause. The first occurance of this on my map was just about 1 in-game month ago when that migrant wave arrived.

This is in version 40d. I'm going to back up this save in case Toady or anyone else wishes to use it. Post in this thread or PM me if you would like the file.

Is part of your fort right next to the edge of the map? Did you dig close to the edge of the map and not have any doors inbetween the mined sections?

Sometimes the gobbos will spawn close to the edge of the map which may be inside your fortress already. I've heard of it happening a few times.

The closest edge of the map is a good 50 tiles away. My fort is slightly south of the exact center of the map. I have dug out large swaths of underground areas right down to my southern border, but my fort is almost entirely aboveground, and in no way do those mined out sections connect to my fortress, let alone the very center.

Is your fort wider than 6x6?

'b' is different than 'x' and a Bed doesn't hold back magma as well as a Floodgate no matter how fast you type.

Have you used any memory-hacking utilities?

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

That sounds very much like something I posted about a while ago:
http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=26627.0

I had a fort with an oblong site, and everything from wild animals to migrants to sieges would occasionally appear on tiles along the line that would have been the eastern edge of the map if it had been square. Unfortunately, the otherwise secure walls of my fort straddled this line.

My fort is either 3x3 or 4x4, but definitely not any bigger. So far the two teleportation sites actually do seem to be along the same X axis, but with only two points that this has happened at, I can't draw any definitive conclusions about whether or not it's along some line of symmetry.

Also, I told a slight fib. My fort is really about halfway between the center and the southern edge, but even then, it's still a good 30-40 tiles away from the edge. I forgot to include the mountains to the north when I estimated the position of my fort.

I have used Dwarf Foreman once or twice in this savegame, I wonder if this could be the problem? Kanddak, do you by any chance also use this program?

Edit: My latest wave of immigrants came just fine. they all spawned on the border like they were supposed to with no problems.

No, I do not. No memory hacking utilities.

Which border? I was noticing that things would come from the north and south edges of my map, but never the east or west ones. It'd be either the north edge, south edge, or line of doom.

My wife just had an interesting siege.

Calls me over to show me that a squad had spawned in her pump operating room, 3 z-levels down in the middle of the map.

On a 4x4, she has had two sieges on this fort before, but those spawned normal. This one had 3 squads, two on the edge of the map, and one right dead in the middle, 3 z-levels down.

Was it a siege or an ambush?  If it was an ambush, it's not inconceivable that a squad could have stealthed its way down there, but if you got the "A vile force of darkness has arrived!" message and found some goblins just hanging out in the pump room...

Yeah, it was a siege. Happened again couple hours ago, and she remembered I asked her to save it the next time it happens after a couple seconds, so she paused the game and saved after a couple seconds after the "A vile force" annoucement.
Apparantly this time they spawned 2 z-levels below at her Trade Depot.
If you find yourself asking "Trade Depot, 2 z-levels down?" I'll just clear that up real quick. 3 up ramps.

Having her dig up the save now, and I'll get it uploaded once she finds it.

Could it be related to the goblin-stuff-teleportation bug? Were any goblins caged, or was there anything of the sort at all near the place where the goblins appeared?

Also "gobjitsu" sounds better. I wonder if "Goboeira" is possible?
