Does this mean we'll be getting a native linux client with the next release?

BTW I'm on kubuntu 8.04 and sound works great with -sound_output ALSA.  This has never worked for me under wine and it's interesting to hear it during the game.

Also, I have a massive monitor.  With:

[WINDOWEDX:1920]
[WINDOWEDY:1280]
[FONT:curses_640x300.bmp]
and
[GRID:240:105]

I had a FPS of ~1450 during battles.  No other problems.  Let me know if you want any other debug info.

incidentally with my standard giant font:
[WINDOWEDX:1920]
[WINDOWEDY:1184]
[FONT:curses_512x320.bmp]
[GRID:96:37]

I get ~6500-8500 FPS during battles - crazy...

Yep. With the re-release of 40d, is the plan.

Good to hear. ALSA is the default however, and does not need to be specified. :)

Okay, dumb question: How do I use this? It appears to be a DF install, but the only exe is "Battle CHamps.exe", and when I try to run that, I get an error window saying:

"The application has failed to start, because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."

[ OK ]

I just want to make sure I'm not missing some obvious detail.

I have the same problem as Teeto. Not sure that's a dumb question, because the program just doesn't work.

OS is Windows XP SP2, video card is ATI Radeon X550.

Hardware specs? Make sure you extract it to a folder and aren't trying to run it from within the zip program or something (I'm sure you're not, but you never know...  ;)).

I'm in the same boat as Grue and Teeto. I extracted in a folder, tried to run, doesn't work.

I'm on XP, Radeon HD 2600 XT (AGP), 2 G RAM, 2,93 GHz Celeron (I know), but as there's so many people with the same problem, I think it's quite unlikely that it is a hardware problem.

Well, for what it's worth it

Works On My Machine!tm

Let me poke around a little. I'm not really a windows expert, but I'll take a look.

Okay it appears you guys need a Visual C++ redistributable DLL, or something. But I'm the linux guy, and will have to do a bit more poking around.

EDIT: The DLL required may or may not be... But again, not super clued in on windows stuff, and I didn't do the build, so you may have to wait for Baughn for a fix. Or you could try... (bad advice removed to protect the innocent)

EDITEDIT: Actually, just wait for Baughn. I wouldn't want to do something stupid to your systems, by proxy.

If that one was built in MSVC, the project settings had "multithreaded DLL" instead of "multithreaded", which might eliminate the need for the DLL, under some setting I don't remember the name of off the top of my head.  I'm not sure what the other implications are.  The currently released DF uses "multithreaded" and doesn't need the redist stuff, so maybe this won't be an issue.  I'm through for the day, very through, so I can't put up a new BC right now without just screwing it up in some way.

I'm not sure if I'm missing something entirely but I've read through everything I can see and I have no idea how to get this to run.

Do I just extract this folder and run "Battle CHamps.exe" [sic] or do I extract it to my Dwarf Fortress root directory and than run either "Battle CHamps.exe" or "dwarfort.exe"?

Either way running the "Battle CHamps.exe" does nothing (as in it runs, uses up 100% CPU usage, and nothing else happens, no crash, no message nothing).  You refer to the "bc.exe" file, I assume by that you are refering to "Battle CHamps.exe" as there is no application in the .rar that has that exact name.

Anyway my system is as follows:
Windows XP SP3 (nlite)
AMD Opteron 165
Nvidia 8800GTS 512 (G92 Core)
2Gb Ram.

Let me know if you need anymore information.

Ahh, I see.  I couldn't figure it out because I thought I had Visual C++ on my computer (turns out I only installed Visual .Net, and unchecked C++).  I'll have a look at it tomorrow.

I couldn't run the latest download for testing either.  Same thing with the not configured properly.  The download seems to include the runtime stuff that is required.  I will take a look at the sources when I get home from work and see if I can compile a version that doesn't require the extra dlls.

That would be helpful. To be honest, I don't really understand Windows myself either.  ::)

This is probably vista related, nothing works on vista anyhow, but when trying to run BC I get message:

Viewing from Event Viewer the error is:

What are you talking about? I have x64 Vista, and even the old DOS games are running on it perfectly... ::)
It is YOUR Vista what is problematic.
..as for your problem:
Try to reinstall the visual c runtime libraries.
