...How does one change directory. I know next to nothing about this stuff.

The "cd" command.  http://www.ss64.com/osx/

Sonofabitch this is confusing as all get-out. No matter what I enter it says "no such file or directory"...

Use the command ls ('list') to show the files and directories in your current working directory (use 'pwd' to find out where exactly that is) . Use cd <directory name> to move in to that directory.

So say ls shows this:

Code: [Select]
gorrilla banana apple

Then use 'cd gorrila' to change into the directory gorilla.

Hopefully that's enough for you to grope your way into the dwarf fortress directory (then run ./df). If not, feel free to ask more questions.

SUCCESS!

Thanks for the help, gents.

...And a late edit. cmd-Q and trying to quit from the toolbar only yields the Escape options, meaning I can only quit by abandoning the fortress... This is bad. D:

Any mac-junkies know the answer to this one?

Shouldn't the link to download d9 be put up on the main DF page so people won't download the the old version?

@Warlord: Can't you save and quit, like normal?

@bill: It's still beta. The next release will use this code.

@bhelyer: But since it might be a long time before the next release and d9 seems pretty stable and offers much better performance shouldn't people who are new to the game at least be aware of the option of d9 over d?  It seems unlikey that someone who is just checking out DF for the first time will find this thread or check the Dev log.

With the 40d9 version, I had to convert the art files to bmp from the png format it came in. Not sure what that was about. Runs fine, though. About 100-200 fps faster on a seven dwarf 6x6 flat embark.

If you're on linux, that could happen if you don't have libpng installed, but.. that's pretty much impossible, and you're probably on windows.

Hmm. I'm not really sure how it works there.

...

DF still doesn't bundle *every* library. It may be depending on libpng being installed by something else. Firefox does so, so you could try that.

I've been trying V9 for several hours and it's crashed twice on me, one time when I randomly clicked on the screen in an attempt to switch windows and another time when it auto-saved at the change of the season. Not sure what else I can say to help you.

If you can get it to consistently reproduce, that would be very helpful. Specs might be useful.

@Warlord255:

If you need to force a quit, there are two easy methods.

  • GUI Method:  hold down control + option while clicking on whatever icon is representing Dwarf Fortress in the Dock.  The control key will bring up a menu, normally including "Quit";  the option key will toggle this to "Force Quit".
  • Console Method:  bring up the Terminal window from which you launched Dwarf Fortress.  Press Control-C.  This will terminate the 'job' (the console-level event responsible for the program).

You may get a bug report dialog if you have Developer Tools installed, or have set things up a certain way;  I forget how it works.  Ignore it.  It's normal in the case of forcing a quit, and in OS X the audio code is always crashing upon quit, unless you turn off the sound in the game.  It's a known problem.  Ignore this as well.

"Suvesh Greasytoes has forged Sadmule the Plusness of Fourty, an Adamantine Shortsword!"

Sometime around then, although IMHO the dwarves don't translate to AD&D that well.
