[40d] Beat 'em wiht a barrel!
« on: December 20, 2008, 08:44:44 am »

So, yeah, my fortress guards keep grabbing barrels and beating criminals with them.  I know the criminals are supposed to be beaten, but this is just a little weird.  Why a barrel?  There are perfectly good weapons (okay bad weapons, but better than precious booze) for them to use, but they just grab a barrel from the food stockpile.  I should probably mention that I leave my fortress guardsmen set to fight unarmed.

And this is how tinned food was invented.
Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Sequence of events:

*Dwarf thinks*: I'm thirsty, I will get a drink.

*Dwarf picks up barrel*

*Crime is committed*

*Dwarf thinks*: CRIMINAL!  I MUST PUNISH THEM!

*Dwarf beats criminal with booze barrel, having forgotten to put it down first*

At least that was the cause of the first few occurrences of this type that I heard about.  Seems the most "logical" thing.

Seems pretty smart really, as we already know from the elves, wooden weapons are the weakest, most pathetic material for weapons out of them all, therefore the best way to punish a criminal without killing them is to hit them with the nearest wooden object, in this case a barrel. If they were to use their fists they'd risk making the mandate violater "explode in gore" so to speak.

Except that full of booze and damage based on weight, those barrels are pretty deadly.

Yeah.  And they aren't grabbing the nearest wooden item, they are going far out of their way just to grab a barrel.

On a similar note, I had a Macedwarf bring a masterful Dwarven Beer barrel to a sparring match. Got screens and a savegame in case you should need it, which I doubt.

Not sure if there is one way to address all of these "dwarf forgets to drop item" issues, but I think another issue could be directly related: Military dwarves grab clothing or armor items while sparring, and then sometimes don't drop them until the player manually checks and assigns that item for dumping. (Example: Macedwarf training wrestling instead of mace, because he's holding his mace and someone else's leggings in his right hand.)
