Holiday Gift Thread
« on: December 19, 2008, 08:00:20 pm »

For discussions/questions/inquires of gift ideas and such.

I've got two problems myself.  One, I ordered a VHS tape from England (I'm American) and I'm not sure if it's not working or if the guy sent me a blank tape.  Does anyone know if VCRs have different regional formatting like modern stuff?

Two, I've got a grandmother who was addicted to the Anne Rice vampire books.  I need to buy her something, but Rice apparently stopped writing.  I never read them myself, so I don't know what something similar would be.

Wife says Feehan's Dark series is similar, except it's a romance series.  :p

Yeah, they do. Get a british VCR player, there's no way it'll cost very much.

Or just get an international DVD player and skip the fad that was VCR tapes.

The problem is the tape in question is a comedic war movie from 1962.  That VHS was the only copy of it I could find anywhere.

Now I need to figure out how to buy a European VCR to watch in on, or just accept that I'm out fifty bucks.  Fantastic.

You could always get her Twilight.  From what I've heard, it's Anne Rice for babies.

Sounds like a bit of a situation. The only solution is ordering a British VCR.

Oh and I just noticed. My birthday by the Hebrew calender is 25th December (Normal date is 23)

Yay. A birthday on Christmas.

Sweet, thast pretty cool. But is the hebrew calander a different timescale to the gregorian one? So is this the first time its happened... or have you just not bothered to look before :D

Yeah, Aqizzar there'll prolly be a british vcr player around somewhere. Most likely buy one from ebay. They stopped selling them in shops here about a year and a half ago.

Yes this is the first time. It happens every 19 years. So it's the first time in my life.

If there's one game that I want for my birthday / Christmas it's L4D.

Too bad I already bought it :D

Two, I've got a grandmother who was addicted to the Anne Rice vampire books.  I need to buy her something, but Rice apparently stopped writing.  I never read them myself, so I don't know what something similar would be.

I read Interview with the Vampire and it was one of the most unbearable reads ever, the only reason I finished it is because I'm extremely compulsive about books - once I start one I HAVE to finish, unless it's absolutely intolerable. That's only happened like twice.

Anyway, my family and friends aren't big on gift giving, which is how I like it. I asked for a few books and CDs of bands I like whose albums are impossible to download, and got my dad a cd, a movie, and my mom some scented candles and fancy herbal tea.

Of course, my mp3 player just broke so now i kind of wish I was in a family that gets that type of gift for each other (see my thread, about to be made, about what mp3 player I should get)
