I just realized something: randoly generated everything is one of DF's defining characteristics (at least IMO), and the cause of much amusement.
And here we are suggesting ways to make it less random.

Don't get me wrong! They're great ideas. I just thought others might get a laugh out of the irony.

The paint idea is also awesome. It would work better than ASCII for much larger scale things, like worlds or large land areas, and ASCII could come in on the level of a single fortress playable map area thing, for precise shapes.

Actually, if we could make terrain using image files...that would be awesomely awesome.

Second thing: Middle Earth

Recreation of the modern world would be great, although it's difficult to asses where all the minerals were before civilization.

Gold in California is all I could guess.

That said, I don't think we need to overboard and start painting on the worldmap just yet; being able to define building-types for civs to use (akin to human cities) would be more than enough, IMO.
