Slightly Distorted Graphics Under Ubuntu 8.04
« on: December 18, 2008, 01:35:54 pm »

It has been driving me insane, and I wanted to know if anyone solved this problem.

I'm running DF 40d with Wine/Ubuntu 8.04 on a Dell Mini 9.  It works great except it is every so slightly distorted no matter what character set I use.  I've tried various square ones, and I'm thinking it may be related to the slight border that DF has around the edges.  I have done the math correctly (I believe) to get the sizes based on the grid and charcet height/width.

Has anyone had this issue and managed to correct it?  I've tried adjusting the x and y, and they can help, but it's still off a bit at best.

Thanks!

Is it still messed up under the default settings? If not, you're off in your calibrations by a hair.

Thanks for the reply, Warlord.

My Mini 9 runs at 1024x600, so I wanted to tweak the defaults.  I don't recall much of the default other than the sizing was wrong.

The latest numbers I'm using are (with a 16x16 tileset):

WINDOWEDX:960  (60*16)
WINDOWEDY:480  (30*16)
GRID:60:30

Unfortunately they are clearly distorted a bit.  I've tried adding pixels (not more grids) but not quite to perfection.

I'll keep at it.

You can't reduce grid below 80, unfortunately.  1280 is the minimum resolution for using a 16x16 properly.

Sphr and Markavian's 12x12 pack might work out better.

Yeah, unless you fancy making your own font, the wiki has a few 12x12's that should work well for you. Hanuman looks close to the original, but there are several other choices you may like.

I did not notice that, thank you for the info!

Using a 12x12 charset, I can still see a wee bit of distortion (the + sign is thicker on the vertical bar), so I'm edging the WINDOWEDX out 2 pixels at a time to try and find out the border width, which I am tentatively blaming for it.

Even the 85x50 grid ratio could work with that smaller tileset.  ;)

There's no "border width," you shouldn't get any distortion.  Here, just use this: http://pkf.olivepeak.com/dwarfcalc.html

Thanks for all your help.  I believe the initial problem was I was under the 80 x min, and then I was confused by the tilesets that had an oval for stone instead of the circles I was used to.  Doh!

I think I have it under control now, thanks again!
