A small worldgen request of savvy genners
« on: December 17, 2008, 03:51:12 am »

Ok, i want a kinda specific world generated and i'm not sure how to go about it.
I want a world which is entirely covered in tundra and glacier, with mountains and clusters of taiga and cold temperate savanna/grassland/hills/shrubland. I don't want the world too cold, just cold enough that water freezes year round but not cold enough that people/animals will freeze to death. A good smattering of volcanism is also a must.

I've tried messing with the temperature and minimum/maximum biome values but i keep getting cold temperate maps with a little bit of tundra/glacier at the north or south edge.

Can a more worlgen savvy person help me out here? Or is there any info on the wiki?

A lot of the settings in world gen will point to minimums/maximums of a given environment type; count these, set their values to 0, and add the values to glaciers and tundra.

Done that, but i do want some other livable (but thematically cold) biomes. What i want is for those biomes to be clustered in certain areas randomly instead of all at one end of the map or other. I know it has something to do with the variance...

If I'm not mistaken, civilizations can only grow on non-mountainous biome, so you should keep that in mind if you don't want endless rejections.

Keep tweaking; make sure that your total counts are the same sum as the original settings, as that's the number intended for a map of that size. So you can subtract some from Tundra/glacier and add some to Grassland/shrubland, as necessary.

Likewise, strict temperature minimums/maximums will keep everything nice and snowy.

Ok, quick question, what's the maximum temperature where water freezes year round and it snows instead of raining?

OK, i've tried tweaking with the numbers fo minimum tundras and glaciers, but it refuses to give me the glaciers. It would rather have infinite rejects. What is required for glaciers (temperature, elevation, drainage, etc.)?
