Every Fortress I See is Enclosed.
« on: December 16, 2008, 09:43:59 pm »

Almost every fortress I see is enclosed, a bottle neck: channeling everything it doesn't want through its one opening like some filter feeding fish.

What I hope to see is game events that encourage the player to leave this defensive position to capitalize on things happening outside his fortress.

A Goblin Caravan is Passing through our Territory
It appears on one side of the map and has an objective: Reach the other side without getting demolished.  If it succeeds: then the next goblin siege or ambush will be armed with superior equipment.

A seasonal migration of [name of species]
Like a siege, but with animals instead of an attacking hoard.  They have an objective: Eat as much plant life as possible and once attacked they flee.

Meteor showers have fallen near your fort.  Go mine the craters for the rare ores, but you have to go through the strange tentacle creatures first, before they get you.

Well, most aboveground, not-digging-capable humies of the medieval era had two options.

1. Find a natural terrain advantage, such as putting your back to a wall/cliff, if you can handle the architectural challenges therein
2. Make a moat and get surrounded.

What we need are ways to make such bottlenecks less omnipotent.

Win

Anyway, are you surprised that every fort is enclosed? they're Forts! they're supposed to be enclosed! Fixing bottlenecking is for the army arc to handle.

anyways, i gots an idea:

A messenger has appeared! The Humans/dwarves/any allied race are having a vicious battle with another human/elf/goblin army nearby, and they would very much appreciate it if you sent troops to help! If this were coupled with some form of diplomacy system, it could even have some form of long lasting consequences from you picking favorites. Of course, such a prospect would be far in the future.

I wounded adventurer has appeared on the horizon, several goblins are in hot pursuit of him! will you choose to abandon post to help him, and let him into your fort so he can heal up? He could be very grateful and reward you in some way.

weeelll... bottlenecks do have a detriment.
I.e. Shitty traffic.
I have a complete Wagon Access way into my fortress.

Yes. Play enough Stronghold 2 and you will be too.

And have him randomly start killing my dwarves until he's wrestled to death by children? I don't think so.

Also:

I wounded adventurer has appeared on the horizon,
Heh. See, I was right. It is that kind of adventurer.

Both of these can be solved by a wall-and-funnel sterotypical fortress entrance.

The only real solution would be tunnelers and siege engines, insofar as historical precedent goes. And maybe giant wooden horses. Perhaps making stone more difficult to acquire.

Traditionally most forts I've made have always had a choke point of some kind (except for the Above Ground Wooden Fort.  The less said about that the Better.)  All of them had entrance tunnels around 10x long.

My First fort had a 1x wide Entrance, and then a 2x wide entrance.  Second fort used a 2x wide entrance.

Newest Fort uses a 3x wide entrance with plans to expand into 5-6x wide.

If my military gets a bit more spiffy (lost a good sizable chunk of soldiers in a disastrous siege), then it's more than likely I'll open up the opposite end of my mountain (a 3x wide path goes from one end to the other), and use that as a second entance.  At first all that will consist of is 2 dogs chained to the wall, and a single Lever linked Door with 3-4 Soldiers posted nearby, but in the future will likely be a 3x wide entance.... for the challenge of course.

I like the idea of creating a system of risk/ reward for fortresses that have poor work flow/ passage size/ layout.  Like setting time conditions on specific events.  For instance the Meteors or the Wounded person running from Goblins.

There are several outcomes.  Perhaps you have a fort with 2-3 entrances and it's a simple matter for you to rouse the guard and get the refugee inside.  Or perhaps you only have one entrance, but you keep a hearty military contingent on duty at all times in front of the entrance and go smite the Goblins.

or just siege engineering, I.E. Goblin builders making bridges and ladders (or stairways). A bridge placed at a random part of your fortress or even at multiple points would let those nasty building destroyers start tearing down your constructed walls, letting the rest of them in.

Some more events would be lovely though, even a simple "Citizens demand an armory! Create 10 full suits of armor, weapons, and shields" sort of thing would be nifty, more so if it gave a global morale advantage for success, and a negative one for failure.

This does exist to a degree in keeping your dwarves happy; their thoughts are visibly plagued by such deficiencies as lack of chairs, lack of tables, lack of beds and sleeping too close to noisy workshops.

However, some suggestions along these lines - such as the return of Guilds which would have their own requirements/demands from time to time, like a mass-entity noble - would fill this request quite soundly.

What about radicals trying to escape, and yes, I did make a plan, triple bulkhead, soon to be disabled, and surrounded with lava, so they can't tamper with it, open the either of the outer locks, and you'll be flooded with lava, and then the perma-lock fail safe to make sure you get your just deserts, and the civilization collapses.

Good print?
