Seriously, do trolls actually come? I've never seen one.

Oh, yeah they do. Eventually.
I think I had to survive three goblin sieges before trolls showed up. They're basically goblin siege weapons.
They can bash down constructed objects like doors and grates, but not drawbridges or walls.
Keep that in mind and save yourself the disaster I had to go through.

In 40d I've only ever seen 5 or so trolls. 3 were in a biome area that apparently had trolls as natural denizens, and the other 2 were from a siege. It was (if I recall correctly) a siege of maybe 30 goblins, half mounted on beak dogs the other half not, and the 2 trolls.

This was only a couple of releases ago, 3D version.
I was never here for 2D.

This was only a couple of releases ago, 3D version.
I was never here for 2D.

People haven't been seeing Trolls since the army arc started.

So, I'm guessing they occur in terrifying swamps?

According to the wiki, they only occur in chasms.  But that could be wrong.

In any case, they seem to be quite rare.

I wouldn't know about trolls in the current version then. I've been on and off the game after the last few releases and never really noticed trolls weren't showing up.
Heck, I don't even seem to get sieges anymore.

Guess that'll all be different after the army arc then.

As in survive in miasma and not air? I would think it would sufficate pretty easy when miasmas gone. You could have NOBREATH or whatever the tag was and they don't have to breath.

I think it was about something like breath weapon. So that troll will inhale air and exhale miasma

A miasma breath weapon would be pretty interesting visually, even if it didn't affect combat much.  Which I have no idea if it would or not, since I'm always careful to control miasma and have never had a large enough siege that it ever became a problem.
