You are forgetting that the pay is apperantly ignorable unless you click on the adds anyhow.

What? Really? I swear I read somewhere, that some companies are paying after the number of unique visitors on the site where the ads were placed. So basically the visitors don't have to click on the ads at all.

Yeah, I asked a webcomic proprietor about this and he gave me the same answer.  It's unique page traffic, not actually clicking on the ads.

With that in mind, ads on the forum would be kind of pointless, since probably not a whole lot of unique traffic here.  Still worth that little bit though, especially if it's some of those text-sensitive Google ad-bars.  But for Armok's sake no pop-ups (I type as I struggle to maintain control of my browser).

So I have a little experience with this - the pay-per-view (called "per impression" in the industry) type adds are much harder to get - you have to generally make a business deal that involves proving your website can attract a certain amount of traffic, which generally involves actual people and often lawyers. They also tend to pay less per unit (but of course you get far more views than clicks so it works out to more, generally). The pay-per-click adds are much easier (basic google adds) and the contract can basically be filled in over a webpage. However, given the traffic stats, and the fact that add-based-revenue as an industry is contracting along with everything else, I find it unlikely that Toady would be making more than 15-20 bucks a month, optimistically. I certainly wouldn't mind some adds to add to Toady's income, but the return on time investment wouldn't be stunning.

Yeah, we don't have too many unique visitors on a daily basis, but we have a proverb here in Hungary: "Many a little makes a mickle."  :D

Couldn't we all just click on the ads 100 times each month and say, "There you go Toady, that's my donation."

On Banners and Such: Absolutely. Money is money, and money, no matter how small it is, still helps.

On Selling Things: Why does the merchandise have to be Dwarf Fortress related? What about:

1.) A hat that says "Bay Watcher", "Escaped Lunatic", or "Liberal Crime Squad" for that matter?
b.) Shirts with the above.
3.) ???
4.) I would positively buy a Ceramic Mug with one of those on there.
5.) Profit.

I would totally buy a shirt/hat with "Liberal Crime Squad" on it, preferably cheap, military styled ones for that ruddy Guevera look.

Holy shit, awesome.  Someone please convince Toady to do it.

I wouldn't mind clicking on ten ads a day for DF, unless of course there are not about anything I'm in the least interested in.

Regarding unique visits. I love this forum, and there are a lot of helpful people here who encourage the new people to stay on. However for the most part I see most of you guys in the threads I read, so we really can't be generating many unique visits. If Toady had direct control over the DFFD and the wiki, I am sure those generate 10x more unique visits per day. I wouldn't care if he tried anything, even if he could just get a portion of his bandwidth covered I'd be happy with this.

Isn't it regarded somehow as fraud if people clicked the ads with the sole purpose of giving the site owner money?
I'd heard of this in another forum somewhere, maybe NexusWar? The administrator had to make it clear that you should only click the ads if you are actually interested, otherwise it's fraud.

I don't know. Don't quote me. I'm not an expert and I could certainly be totally wrong.

In any case, ads would be fine for me so long as there are no sounds, no popups, and none of that stuff that floats across the screen and gets in my way.

Yeah, but you forget about something. Everytime when I visit the forum, there are at least 60 registered users, and 50 guests online. I visit the forum more times / day within a 12hours period. I think that we must have at least 1000-2000 unique visitors / day. Toady could tell us about the exact numbers actually, I am just guessing.  :)

Personally it shouldn't even count as fraud anyhow since most adds arn't actually there to draw attention to the product... but rather to increase traffic and thus get higher on search engines.

Though for the adds which really ARE adds, as in they really expect you to become interested in the add... yes... that could be seen as fraud.

Just so you know, its a pain in the ass to start a new product line when you are the online equivalent of a starving artist. First Toady has to have a finalized design for the product in question in his hands plus enough starting capital to order one full manufacturing batch... usually at least 100 of anything he wants. This probably means he has to have at least 100 preorders from the likes of us.

But I'm relatively new here. Maybe he has some magical deal with the legendary crapfairy.
