You'd think the google ads on the wiki would do similar things but I see one ad for an adventure game, one weight loss ad, and "»Free Government Grants«"

[...on the other hand, Google Ads searching our thread wording could yield some hilarious results.

"Find great prices on Elf bones!"
"Great Kitten recipies!"

I was going to abstain voting until I saw this. I'm in.

If the ad revenue is negligible, I would also probably nix the idea... on the other hand, Google Ads searching our thread wording could yield some hilarious results.

"Find great prices on Elf bones!"
"Great Kitten recipies!"
You have just sold me on the idea of google ads regardless of how much money it nets Toady.

"Enjoy a refreshing magma bath - find out how!"

I'm pretty sure Toady has already considered this. He obviously doesn't hate money or anything and yet he is paying money to keep this site running.

I guess no advertiser thinks its worth any money to run an ad here because of the low traffic. There really isn't a hellava lot of traffic here and we are not really the demographic that'd click on an advertisement, unless somebody put a gun to our heads.

Anybody willing to place an ad on this site would either be doing it for an insignificant sum of money, or it would be some noisy porn ad that would make people hate coming here.

Maybe in the future when the Dwarf Fortress forum has 1 million teenagers and noobs running around it would be worth it to place ads here. Before then? I don't think its worth it.

Hmmmm.... Well, with the invention of Addblock Plus, this is a moot point. I would never notice adds or no adds. Since with adds just means that there might be some iexplicable blank spots and that Toady One would get a few extra bucks a month, I'm absolutely fine with it.

May I suggest Project Wonderful for the forum's ads? At least that way Toady can have influence over what ads are displayed, and the revenue can be a little more immediate and focused, plus being rather unobtrusive.

today could make quite a bit more than "a few bucks a month" from adds on the bay 12 site.

Try, 30 bucks a day

I mos'def put faith in websites that aim to get people to sell domains, and merely go by Alexa ratings and even disclaim themselves of any accuracy.

The only way to get real world 'results' on how much ads you'd get, would be to have real world trials, and even then fluctuations in clickthroughs would be a huge factor in month to month earnings.   Non-annoying ads at the tops and bottoms of pages may defray hosting costs, but would also require some level of management.  More profitable ad types tend to be annoying, and most often the owner, Toady, would have very little control over the content.

Adding adspots isn't a simple switch for free money.   I'm certain Toady's considered it before, and I can imagine that the hassle of setting it all up and dealing with ads on his site just isn't worth the possible gains to him.

I wouldn't mind some banner ads, as long as there are no popups.

I wouldn't mind ads (as long as they are not popups), but I actually think the fact that Toady runs his site without any ads makes him seem very serious and classy. Ads could scare away some people and I doubt he'd earn much money from them.

I agree with ads.
Between the monthly reports showing less money streaming in and the depression, this will be very helpful in keeping the Toad active.

I agree that he probably wouldn't earn much money from them. However, I wouldn't have a problem with (some) ads if he wanted to try.

Erm, is this is a question at all? Yes of course...what's the problem with ads anyway? I never bothered with them.  :P
[Something Awful is full with adverts for example, but I am not even noticing them anymore. Those are part of the website.  ;D]
PS. Popups wouldn't be a problem anyway. Just use some popup blocker.  ;)

I agree that he probably wouldn't earn much money from them. However, I wouldn't have a problem with (some) ads if he wanted to try.

The amount of earned money depends on the number of unique visitors / day IIRC.

You are forgetting that the pay is apperantly ignorable unless you click on the adds anyhow.

I am still going to be against Adds... bad enough they are creeping into videogames now... well they have always been there but now they are doing "Updated adds". (The Sims 3 for example is going to have In game adds)
