Changing the character used for ground
« on: December 15, 2008, 10:36:01 pm »

Is there a way to make a more easily distinguished ground tile without replacing every period in the game? While it's nice to be able to distinguish level ground from low ground it's about as annoying to have every sentence end in a big speckle. So where (if anywhere) would the property for designating which character belongs to any floor tile be and how can you change that?

Ah, you've come up against the practical limitations of the current tile system - right now, a lot of things are hardcoded - hopefully someday everything will be a flexible as the creature graphics, but for now there isn't anything you can do to seperate periods and plain ground.

I found that it's better to edit the graphics of the character used for channels: It doesn't show up in text, and its only other use is for Seeds.

I'm sure you can come up with something.

Look into tilesets and the like, one of the favorites is the mayday pack.

A common solution to this problem is to get a graphics pack that has both a large dot near the bottom and speckles in the tile for a period.

This results in obvious periods at the end of your sentences, but you still get a fairly speckly ground.

I think Mayday's mixed font uses this strategy. I don't particularly like it, though, because it makes the ground look really busy and convoluted IMO.
