It all began kinda slow. Just me getting used to the interface and all that. Getting a tileset helped alot.
I began digging into the earth, just messing around, and not having a single idea of how to do anything but dig.

After a bit of digging, my diggers stumble upon some damp stone, and I decide to just dig through. Needless to say, my entire "fortress" gets flooded, drowning many dwarves.
Oh, and half of my expedition got offed by a few carps.

heh I read the wiki for a week straight before even trying to play the game.

It helped, but it was still hard to figure out what was going on.

It helps to have a sadistic streak when playing DF. Masochism is useful as well. Bondage experience... less so.

Well, I am finally getting the hang of the interface of DF. The only thing remaining is to not laugh everytime one of my dwarves decides to hijack a workshop and make something mysterious.
