I found an excellent compact fortress location (40d)
« on: December 15, 2008, 01:10:54 am »

On the world map 4th square from the right of the map, 3rd from the bottom.
In the "World of Oracles" in land of the "sooty finger", Just north west of the volcano "The Tiled-Lizard Blazes" on the bank of the brook "lordrevered". There is a haunted mountain in the middle of a wilderness forest. Within a 4x4 area you can find a brook, magma vent, Hidden Fun Stuff, a cave pool, a cave river, a chasm and flux. And you could get most of that feature set with a embark as small as 2x3.

Go to Design new world with parameters from the main menu.
select medium size map.
press "e"
shift the keys from "random" to "yes" and input the three keys in the appropriate spaces.
All the other parameters should be default (with the exception of the "show_embark" features I have turned on by default in my init file).
Hit "space" to return to the generator page, hit "enter" to generate the world.

Also note that the site has access to goblins, elves and human civs as well.
You can get all my listed features on a 3x3 map, though you probably won't have enough flux for a healthy industry

You are welcome. I would also point out the site is full of gems near the surface. Had to temporarily suspend digging of my main hall until my miners had the skill to harvest the gem clusters with high chance of success.

Thanks for uploading the save.  That helps so much.  I must have been doing something wrong, because every time I tried using the seeds, that mountain was never haunted.

edit:  Also I had access to all civs and was at peace with all.  What did you do that made this save start off at war with elves?  ...I'm still embarking :D

War with the elves? Sweet! Oh, I forgot to check out all the available dwarf nations. My civ was at peace with the elves. Just about the only thing it is missing is sand for glass.

As for why one might not be able to get the mountain haunted? not sure exactly. It might be that its not a perfectly clean install. I have a few minor mods up when I generated this world. One is that all gems have the [GLASS], the other is that any soil type with sand in its name had the [SOIL_SAND] tag added. That might be it.

The save had the mountain haunted.  When I used the seed everything looked the same except there weren't any haunted areas around.

I can't remember which civ I embarked from now, but I checked two of them and both were at war with elves and ----- goblins.  The last two civs iirc.  I chose the second from last, just can't remember the name.  Anyways I'm excited about being at war with the elves.  I've never had that happen except in Kobold Camp.  I'll probably get butchered the first time any show up to ambush or siege me, but oh well.  Losing is fun, right?

Thanks again.

For those who are trying out this awesome seed, the dwarf civ The accidental lenses are at war with the elves.  Just so you know

Specifically we don't use swear words here, and your picture of Stalin riding a Year3 Limited Edition Starflower inside a German concentration camp was both upsetting and historically inaccurate.

I can not remember if mat gloss mods used at world gen will stay active if you don't have the files set up correctly... But it might be possible to harvest sand from the sandy-loam and make crystal glass from any gem if the mods stuck.

If not, I could upload the changed matgloss files as well.

Or as long as you're circumventing, you could just add in some appropriately placed sand tiles with Tweak.

Is the ground sloped enough for a decent waterfall?  Any megabeasts still alive?  Oh, it doesn't matter.  I'll be checking it out later anyway.

The elves are no joke, either. When I used this world, the first elven dinner party showed up promptly the very first spring after the fortress was founded, and they brought a lot of mouths to feed...
