Trembling Hand DF article
« on: December 14, 2008, 11:52:10 am »

http://www.tremblinghand.net/2008/12/dwarf-fortress-worth-25000.html

Just noticed this on Blue's News and figured I'd share it. And for the record, I disagree with him on whether it's a "good game".

A good game is something that the player decides, we're all entitled to our own opinion, but it's hard to see what exactly the author is describing.

Though it is true DF is an alpha game, it's big, and that's pretty much the only reason Toady released this alpha. It must be hard enough for him making the game by himself, (with some help from Threetoe), but playing it! I can't imagine how long it would take him if it were just him play testing it!

So yes, it's incomplete, and new things are being added everyday, things just take time from coding them to releasing them to fans.

Although I do disagree on these points the author makes.
-Ugly
-Sinful?
-Crappy ascii!!!

I hope the author knows how many people could be offended by that!

wow...just wow!  :o
I can understand, if someone dislikes the game...I can understand if someone is posting his subjective opinion about a game, but...
"Bay 12 draws in revenue from nothing more than a crappy ASCII game with big, fat, Promise." -> What the hell is this?

First off, those people who donate are the real fans. They like the game. If they want to donate, what is the problem with that?
Secondly, this game is already much more complex and diverse = FUN. than the "commercial" games. [ASCII and bad interface..yes it's true, but eventually those parts of the game will be improved also. We will have a separated txt/gfx engine, and an upgraded interface when Toady will work on presentation arc. Promise or not, we know that it will happen.] The reviewer sounds like a pissed off kid to be honest.  ::)

Quote
Yeah the author is offending a huge community of people.

We pay not for a promise but for the thing that we've got and this is our way to show gratitude to the author because there's no another game like this.

Before making an article like this make a poll on forums. You'll be surprised.

Also I'm almost sure that this kind of article can be unpleasant for people who love the game.

Well, why did you do it? Is it your unability to enjoy a complex game or are you just jealous?

Anyway you don't prevent our help, you don't make anything bad to the developer since he has a nice fanbase which will support him. You DO make a nice anti-reclame, but it's still a reclame.

I hope more thinking people will read the article, be interested and join the community.

If you didn't want to make a reclame, better spend your time on something more useful.

This is my comment. I think that this article gives nothing, it's just another way to advertise the game. I'm almost sure that most thinking people won't be fooled by this and will try the game.

I don't mind the guy not liking the game... a lot of people don't like Dwarf Fortress. It certainly isn't a flawless game, and different people have different standards.

But he makes it sound (especially in the last part) like the game is somehow cheating the players out of their money while honest, hardworking game devs are struggling to get any income, and that it's all some kind of big injustice... which is probably the most retarded thing I've heard in quite a while.

Here's part of my reply:

I don't understand this sentence: "It's fun, innovative, and full of awesome, but a good game? No." If something's fun, innovative, and full of awesome, then it seems to me (and I guess I am crazy enough to think that 'fun, innovative, and full of awesome' are positive qualities) that it's actually quite a good game after all. It's hard for me to see this article as anything more than a joke.

Really, though - is this guy serious?  It's so illogical I'm actually starting to think it might be a joke.

Lol, he's praising the game guys.

"It's fun, interesting, innovative,"

"Perhaps the most surprising thing about Bay 12's $25,000 free game is that it's not worth more..."

"I donated many moons ago"

"We scratched the surface and caught a glimpse of another world. One where armies clash and civilizations rise and fall; where incredible obsidian fortresses dot the land, and foul tormentors lurk unseen. Right now, we're just struggling to keep the dwarves alive through winter, but each time we play, we scratch a little harder, and that ephemeral vision congeals a little bit more."

Just a dabbling journalist. Let him train on crap. He really believes he can become a legendary journalist one day by making a lot of "rope reed blocks".

What a crappy review.

And if you would look at the bottom...90% of the comments go against what says.

Why do people bother posting worthless reviews like this?

90%?
I didn't see one person defending the author.

The author is obviously a graphics whore, seeing as the ASCII graphics are what he complains about more than anything else.

I like the ASCII, I find it beautiful and informative.
Every symbol has a use, its not useless Bloom or crappy textures.

If no-one liked DF, no-one would donate, something he needs to understand.
He must not have the intelligence to play it properly.
