periodic lockups
« on: December 14, 2008, 05:21:39 am »

Whenever i play the game i get a lockup of 2sec to about 2 min, after this the game goes on as if the lockup never happened eg. it goes into about 1000FPS for a sec so that the end result is that the lockup never happened(in time that is).

i even get this problem in the menu.
does anyone here knows what could be causing this, its very annoying

It's odd if it's happening in the menu, as there's not much going on there.  Has anybody else seen anything like this?

I have, but I think mine at least is due to a general system-wide lack of resources (e.g. Firefox does the same thing). How much memory does the original poster have, and what else is running while DF is?

I have seen this happen on occasion in my game as well under very narrow circumstance ranges.

typicly after designating trees to be cut and the like.

i have 2 GB of RAM and the programs that run in the background are foreman and firefox.

Firefox if its on a site with excessive poorly written flash advertisements will cause problems. But I am betting its more likely a problem with something reading the hard disk you don't know is there, or dwarf fortress itself.

slim - These lockups are only happening if you are playing with DF, or you notice these lockups when you are playing with other games also?

I'm having something similar - the game is locking up for a half second every second or so. See this thread: http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=29164.0

well i sometimes have these lockups with fallout 3 whenever the radio changes, but these are really short. it also happens a lot on legend hand of god and titan quest, these are longer and produce graphic errors. some other games like supreme commander are unplayable because of this

Well....
1. It's possible that your CPU is overheating. You can run a stress test [100% CPU load for ~10-15 minutes] to make sure that it's overheating or not.
2. If it's not overheating, try to disable caching.
3. If the cache is not the problem it's possible that some trojan/virus/registry error/software is causing the lockups.
4. Reinstall windows, and if the problem still exists, you have a hardware problem. [motherboard, memory, hard drive]

I would also suggest running a memory test program.  A small memory error can produce the same results as Windows doesn't remember to avoid trying that part of the memory again.

Graphics card problems will also cause a lockup when thier driver resets them.  Usually you can tell if this is the problem because after being reset a number of times the driver will diable some/all of the acceleration.
