I cannot figure out what that number on the left of the development posts means!! I skimmed each post with the number, and the post before that, for the answer. Am I missing something?

If your talking about the number at the beginning of each post in the devnow, if I remember correctly it's the number of items for toady to get through before the next release, some of which contain sereral/many sub items.

Before big releases, Toady makes a huge ass list of all the stuff he has to do.  The number is how many items haven't been done yet.  It's been going down very slowly because the last couple dozen items have been more like mega-items.

Nah, if anything, he'll be finishing some PART of the release this week; he's a very organized man. I'm constantly amazed at his discipline.

Not even close. We probably won't get a release until April.  The last "big" release, the conversion from 2D to 3D, was also a very long dev cycle with no releases, I think from January to October.  And this cycle has about as many if not more changes.

well, wounds will be fixed, crossbows should be relativly unbroken, the attribute system will be completely different, and you'll should have working squad level control over your military... I'd say that qualifies.

April is most certainly a month selected at random.   My money's on March!

Because armies march.

Crossbows will be changed? How so?

Also, what's more impressive (in my opinion) are the changes he's doing to the creatures. Tissue layers/materials and eyebrows, fer chrissakes.

He hasn't mentioned direct changes to crossbows, but I expect the changes to wounds ("reasonable instead of being loopity loopy paths around the parent part") will affect piercing wounds the most, since those are the ones that tend to hit every single organ in your upper body at once.

Plus both eyes and your left foot.  ;D

Yeah, the tissue layer changes will be big. Especially when it comes to modding in new and interesting creatures.

Also, this version is going to have at least some underground diversity, which means we'll see some nice new stuff to play around with in Fortress mode!

Your right, tissue changes will be the combat systems equivalent of the move from 2d to 3d. you'll notice it, all the time.

As far as I understand, Toady has a giant list of things to be done. They include a breakdown of new stuff to add, changes to make, and bugs to fix. The countdown is the number of items left on the list.
