Whats the best way to get dwarves to spar? I got 8 dwarves and I only see a few at a time sparring if at all.

Assuming they're off-duty, check to see if they're injured. Injured dwarves don't spar until the injuries heal, and nervous (i.e. brain, neck and spine) injuries never heal.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

Have a barrack set up with plenty of room, make sure they've got no nerve injuries, if they does put them on markmanship training, and that they're off-duty. And time, I don't know of any way to encourage them to train.

I already know about the needing barracks, the spinal injuries, and the off duty deal. Currently none are in a squad and that seems to help a little.

Do you have a nice statue garden or well for a meeting place?  If so they might be hanging out there a lot.  My lazy military dwarves like to party with the civilians instead of training.  Who can blame them?
