New Workshop Reaction Brainstorming
« on: December 11, 2008, 03:50:40 pm »

From the dev_now logs, it has been revealed that the following workshops are getting opened up in the RAWS for reaction modding;

-Tanner's shop
-Alchemist's shop
-Millstones/Querns
-Farmer's workshop
-Kitchen (Fat rendering)

What are the possibilities?

Some that come to mind:

-Milling stones; for example, grinding rock salt into a food item.
-Custom cooking via fat rendering?
-Alchemical reactions to implement some of the more nonsensical smelter reactions and make them feasible.

Being able to mill your own bone meal instead of... finding it.  ;D

I don't think he meant the mill or farmer's workshop are going to get exposed for reactions.  I think he meant it's some new functionality in the plant raws dealing with what material is used for thread/powder/liquid/seeds.

Aw......

Well, we still have the other three, so there's still plenty that can be done.

Hmm. Well, this is what led me to believe we'd be able to tinker with milling; I hope that I'm right, but if not, there are still workarounds.

Alchemist shop could offer a lot of possibilities if its as open as smelter reaction which allow you to use just about anything for reagents and products.  A proper alchemist shop should let you make a good number of chemicals that could be at the least sold for profit.  The biggest issue is really the ability to create items which are exclusively intermediate products, for example I don't know if it will be possible to define a product that's not in one of the present 'classes' which will define some use for it that we might not want.  A number of chemicals created by reacting an acid with metal can be useful for dyes which tended to be the most complex chemicals employed in mass at the time.

Also the tanners shop would be the logical place to create glue from skin as that's ware glue making was done in antiquity, not sure what use the glue will be useful for other then perhaps encrusting gems onto things but obviously that takes more raw-expansion.

I hope you're right too.  I've been wanting the ability to make bone meal and various random powders for forever.

At the absolute minimum, a lead-to-gold reaction involving some exotic intermediary ingredients would be worth examining.

Also, something involving ice and a crystal product would be interesting as a "pseudomagic" reaction.

REAL DWARVES MINE THEIR GOLD!

Seriously though lead to gold doesn't sound appealing at all, exotic ingredients just mean you have to do a lot of importing of these ingredients which is tedious for one and at most those ingredients can't exceed about half the cost of a gold bar if your going to make a decent profit on the reaction.

I think Alchemists shops should explode when used by Urist McCheesemaker.

But create extracts and stuff when used by Fikod Legendary Alchemist

Hmm. Well, you CAN create a sort of glitch-antimatter explosion by trying to, say, make a throne out of nonspecific bone as the product; adding this as a percent chance to an alchemist's shop reaction could be interesting.
