Soliders not sparring

None of my soldiers have been sparring lately, though the marksdwaves are still practicing.  This seems to be related to the fact that the soldiers all have something like "leather waterskin, leather shirt" as one of the lines in the inventory WITHOUT a body part following the two items (none of the marksdwaves have this inventory problem).  I've tried changing the armor settings and telling the soldiers to not carry water, but they don't drop the waterskins.  Any ideas about what's going on?  I have an adamantine artifact spear and my speardwarf isn't training!!!!

I don't think it's the waterskins, I'm pretty sure soldiers pick up those and backpacks even if they're not carrying food/water.

Check their wounds screen and make sure to scroll down, any nervous injuries = never sparring again.

You're right: they ALL have a brain/neck injury.  I guess it's time to switch them out with my haulers.  Thanks for the very quick answer!
